MY REVIEW

I chose this book due to the unusual plot of a woman gone rogue. This is book 2 of the Sally Mellors Adventures series and I suggest you read book 1 first. With that being said, this is a captivating read considering the murderer is a well-liked and unassuming local author who has an alter ego.

Sally Mellors is a well-known local artist and widow living in a lovely English seaside town with many friends including her best friend, widow, and photographer, Emma Johnson. As cyclists, they enjoy riding the many tracks in the area to scope out scenic views for their art…and scout out ways to escape from their murderous adventures.  You see Sally and Emma are angry at the injustice of wife beaters getting away with their nefarious deeds. So Sally’s alter ego Selina is let loose to get rid of the dregs of society by using very ingenious and clever methods including a bola, a sling, a sword, and other interesting methods of torture. Though Sally does the physical work, Emma is the getaway car and alibi so to speak. Now that the bodies are racking up, the police (Sally and Emma’s friends) are discovering clues and conclude that Selina is their suspect.  Will Sally and Emma keep getting away with it or will their friends connect the dots?

I was impressed with Sally’s clever ways of revenge and envious of the extremely great physical condition she must be in to traipse around on her bicycle and her motorbike every day.  Hint: Quite the feat on a suspension bridge I must say! As I have discovered from reading reviews about book 1, Sally and Emma are widows because their husbands were killed by drunk drivers. Hence the beginning of Selina’s murder spree.  At the end of book 2, Selina (Sally) has racked up a whopping total of 10 bodies. Sally and Emma are a hilarious pair who are also compassionate and help the widows of the wife beaters by creating the Freedom Club.  Let’s not forget Sally and Emma’s good friends, Peregrine, Susan, Paul and Felicity, who are ironically police detectives and the local coroner and very clever with their discoveries in their own right.

Though I was a bit lost at the beginning, this book was a surprisingly dark and entertaining read. Sally’s hatred of the murder victims and the ferocity of the acts themselves are very shocking considering who she is, but that is what makes this such a captivating read. In addition, Mr. Findlay apparently has done an immense amount of research on the area and includes detailed maps in the book and on his website. Again, I recommend you read book 1 first just to get the whole picture. If you like dark mysteries with engaging characters, check this one out.

Thank you to Mr. Findlay for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.

    1. It is my pleasure. You have added some very inventive techniques for Selina’s carnage. I can’t wait to see what you come up with in the next book. Good luck with your publication. 🙂
