MY REVIEW

Welcome to my spot on the A Bachelor’s Pledge Publication Day Push. This is book 3 in the series, but can be read as a standalone.

Wow! Two books in a row set around the time of the Battle of Waterloo, the main characters meet in a brothel, and the man works as an agent. What are the chances? 

My first Penny Hampson novel brings us an enemies-to-lovers story with the brooding and demanding secret agent Phil Cullen and the stubborn and independent Sophia Turner.

The sparks begin when the impulsive and gallant Phil saves the obstinate and suspicious Sophia from ruin and introduces her to his overbearing personality. Phil’s consternation with Sophia’s disregard for her safety and his overwhelming need to protect her is a sure sign of his point of no return. Sophia’s anger at Phil’s demands and her confusion of why a gentleman like Phil would want to help her is beyond her comprehension, but she’s unable to stop her feelings for him.  Enter Sophia’s mysterious past which is connected with Phil’s current case of a notorious spy and traitor in their midst and you get an enthralling who-done-it as well.

Overall, I enjoyed this absorbing historical romantic mystery that swept me away to the coast of Southwest England in the time of Napoleon’s campaign to invade England. If you enjoy books filled with history, romance and secrets, give this book a try.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Some time ago Penny Hampson decided to follow her passion for history by studying with the Open University. She graduated with honours and went on to complete a post-graduate degree.

Penny then landed her dream role, working in an environment where she was surrounded by rare books and historical manuscripts. Flash forward nineteen years, and the opportunity came along to indulge her other main passion – writing. Penny joined the New Writers’ Scheme of the Romantic Novelists’ Association and three years later published her debut novel, A Gentleman’s Promise, a historical mystery/romance and the first in The Gentlemen Series. An Officer’s Vow soon followed and the latest in the series is A Bachelor’s Pledge.

But never happy in a rut, Penny also writes contemporary suspense with paranormal and romantic elements. Her first book in this genre is The Unquiet Spirit, published by Darkstroke.

Penny lives with her family in Oxfordshire, and when she is not writing, she enjoys reading, walking, swimming, and the odd gin and tonic (not all at the same time).
