Poison in the Pills by August Raine

ABOUT THE BOOK

A mysterious illness is ravaging the nation. Those suffering from the dreaded sickness are in so much pain that, in many cases, they have peeled the flesh from their bones in a desperate attempt to relieve their symptoms.

Set in and around Manchester, the novel follows Jack Bright, a scientist working to cure the sickness. When a clinical trial goes tragically wrong, Jack realises that there has been a terrible mistake. But before he can find out more, he is framed.

Desperate, not only to clear his name but also to find the cause of the sickness, Jack is forced to resort to increasingly questionable methods. Breaking and entering. Blackmail. Kidnapping. With every decision, his morals are tested, to the point that he wonders whether the end justifies the means. But despite this, he perseveres, motivated by a tragedy in his past.

Jack’s luck is constantly dwindling, until he finds himself racing – not just against the people who are after him, but also the dreaded sickness.

MY REVIEW

I was busily scrolling down the list of emails, but something beneath the desk was making it difficult to sit comfortably. Irritably, I reached under and pulled out a small duffel bag. The zip was open, revealing a small digital timer. It was counting down, seconds away from zero.

Mr. Raine kindly sent me his debut novel to review and boy, was it a page-turner! With edgy characters, action-packed suspense, and an itch to be scratched, this book is applicable to the times.

Jack Bright is a hot-headed scientist insistent on finding out what is causing the mysterious and painful illness called Itch infecting hundreds of thousands of people so far. But first, he has to prove his innocence after being framed as a drug dealer and it’s not looking good. With the help of his former co-worker Lizzy and his friend, Erin, it’s going to be a dangerous journey fraught with the police on his tail, the help of the menacing and creepy Swedish dude, Klas Berglund, and worst of all, Jack fighting the deadly virus.

I couldn’t put this book down!  The tension builds as Jack is desperate to find the truth behind the illness as he battles with his guilt from the past. Watching Jack’s plans get thwarted time and time again is frustrating, but the twists and turns bring the reader closer to the truth which in the end is a shocker!

I wholeheartedly recommend this book to readers who enjoy a good medical thriller with lots of action and many surprises!

Thank you to Mr. Raine for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

After many years of writing, I’ve finally finished my first novel, Poison in the Pills, which I’ve self-published through Amazon. Although this wasn’t something I’d ever considered, it’s proven to be the best course for me.

Maintaining total control over the content, I’ve been able to publish the work exactly as I intended. I decided to create a blog for two reasons. The first is to promote my debut and future novels. The second is to bring some of my other ideas to life as short stories. I hope you enjoy my work.
