While there, she meets Gabriel Sutton, a world-travelling high fashion photographer who is in danger of losing his clients as well as his status if he doesn’t start following the rules. While hiking, kayak racing, and participating in team challenges, sparks fly between Alyssa and Gabe as they encourage each other to take different life paths. But will those paths lead them farther apart or bring them closer together?

MY REVIEW

She makes bad choices in men. He travels too much to form a meaningful relationship. Can two opposites find happiness together?

ER nurse Alyssa Beckman came to Glenn Pines to get her head straight, learn to be independent, and stand on her own without a man. But the handsome and charming fashion photographer, Gabe, has thrown a wrench in her careful and organized plans by capturing her heart. He is unlike any man she has ever met. He lives in New York City and travels the world. She hates cities and is a homebody. How can they have a future when they are so different?

Alyssa and Gabe are changing their lives and they don’t know how each other fits into that transition. Their attraction is immediate and they fall fast so even though they learn a lot about each other in one week, reality hits and they go their separate ways. Alyssa needs some time to find herself and wants to try something new in her career. Gabe is passionate about photography and he wants to travel less and settle in one place. I love how they open each other’s eyes to new possibilities. I’m proud of Alyssa for making the change for herself, but I feel she is too negative and uncompromising when Gabe proves his love for her by trying to change his career to be closer to her. I admire Gabe for being so patient and respectful of Alyssa’s feelings and choices and for taking Alyssa’s advice to make amends with his father who chose his work over his family. After several challenges and setbacks, Gabe’s endless patience and persistence finally gets the girl of his dreams, but what’s to say Alyssa won’t have another meltdown when Gabe does something she doesn’t like? In my opinion, he sacrificed a lot for her and she didn’t bring anything to the table. Ah, love is blind.

I enjoyed this humorous and angsty romance with realistic and flawed characters who meet at a beautiful mountain retreat in Pennsylvania.

The photographer passed her, continuing to snap away as they made their way down through the wooded landscape. His focus veered from trees to foliage to candid shots of the hikers. Maybe he worked for Glenn Pines. That would explain why he cut in on her conversation with Sharon and why they seemed to know each other better than a receptionist and a guest might otherwise. Although he was missing the chipper gene. Would they end up back at the activities center facing a wall of photos to purchase like at an amusement park?

Alyssa made sure she stayed out of his camera’s eye. She looked a mess, felt worse, and didn’t need to see the evidence on a five-by-seven glossy.

Clickety-click.

She looked up to see the camera’s lens pointing in her direction. “Hey. Don’t do that. I don’t want to buy any photos.”

Good, because they’re not for sale.” A smirk insinuated itself on his mouth.

Don’t you need my permission to take my picture?” Her hands went automatically to her hips—her “meaning business” pose.

Only if I want to sell it.” He snapped another picture. “But that scowl on your face would never sell.”

Maria Imbalzano is a retired matrimonial lawyer who now writes full time. Instead of drafting motions, legal memoranda, and briefs, although fascinating, she now spends her days creating memorable characters and taking them on their emotional journeys through her contemporary romance novels.
