MY REVIEW
I enjoy a series about families and boy, is this family unusual. Unfortunately, I started at the end of the series and struggled to catch up with what was going on. I recommend you start from the beginning.
Dr. Darren “Dare” Russell is a sought-after neurosurgeon who has been given an opportunity of a lifetime. To get out of San Francisco and become head of neurosurgery in Baker Creek, Oregon. Sounds like a downgrade, right? Not to Dare. He hopes to get some peace from his overbearing family and their lack of boundaries when it comes to his love life. Not that Dare wants love anymore after his disastrous past. Sex with no strings is his thing. It doesn’t hurt that the very hot and sexy brooding Vance Aldridge has been tasked with chauffering him around. Yes, Vance is a volatile and angry guy, but Dare sees through that.
Delta Force Vance Aldridge killed his ex-lover and feels responsible for almost killing his brother. He’s shut himself off from any feelings due to his tumultuous family life and his bad job choices. Now he’s forced to see a psychologist to deal with his feelings in order to get cleared for a consultant in The Organization. Unfortunately, his feelings are being f*cked with due to the annoying and cocky Dr. Dare Russell. The guy can’t keep quiet, he teases him mercilessly, and Vance can’t stop thinking about him.
The chemistry between Vance and Dare is instant, but their relationship takes some time as Dare slowly wears Vance down using his charm and honesty. In fact, Vance’s habit of rescuing people has him saving Dare from his mother’s manipulative ways by making up a fake relationship to stop her incessant matchmaking. With that being said, I thought the romance was a bit overpowered by Vance’s weird family dynamic which includes Vance’s philandering father who has children from six different women and has stipulated in his will that they all live together in Baker Street for a year to get to know each other. And apparently, there are other secrets Vance’s father had that are surprising at best.
There are a lot of supporting characters including Vance’s brothers and Dare’s pain-in-the-ass parents and sisters who don’t have the decency to stay out of Dare’s personal life. I did enjoy the rapport between Vance and his psychologist Dr. Sanders who gets Vance to sort out his feelings.
Overall, this is an interesting story full of complex characters and a compelling family bond. I recommend you read the series in order to understand the multitude of characters and storylines.
