ABOUT THE BOOK
Mason Hill wants one thing: revenge. When Charlotte Van Kempt walks into his office, all innocence and desperation, he knows the perfect way to get it. He makes a dark bargain. She’ll give him her body to save her family. Little does she know he plans to ruin both.
No doubt I should know better than to start reading a trilogy, but when an alpha hero is out for revenge and the heroine gets in the way, it’s always a hot read.
Charlotte Van Kempt is struggling to keep her family business afloat after her father tanked it with his drinking and bad deals. This is not what she wanted in life. Charlotte wants to design clothing. So she keeps her family business afloat by working at Van Kempt Industries by day and designing and selling clothing for her Etsy shop by night. When she enters Mason Hill’s office at Phoenix Enterprises to convince him to invest in her company, she has no idea the hate and revenge Mason has in store for her and her father. He will stop at nothing to destroy the Van Kempt’s like they destroyed his family.
Mason Hill has waited fourteen long years building his company, Phoenix Enterprises, to get his vengeance on Cyrus Van Kempt and when Cyrus’s daughter, Charlotte, walks into his office, he is surprised and intrigued at what she says. However, it doesn’t change the fact that he is going to ruin the Van Kempts and she is the perfect prey.
Charlotte is tough and resilient as she shoulders all the burden of her drunken father’s business failures. She is not a savvy businesswoman, but I admire her spunk and tenacity to find an investor to hopefully make a profit on her father’s once-lucrative project. She is kind to everyone around her as she scrapes by with homemade clothes, cheap shoes, and a mansion crumbling down around her and her parents. Unfortunately, she falls into the hands of Mason Hill who is determined to rip her family apart and take away her dignity in the process by agreeing to invest if she spends every Friday with him until the project is done. Mason has a lot to be angry about with the way Cyrus Van Kempt and his wife turned their backs on Mason’s family after the death of Mason’s parents in a fire. A fire that is suspect at best and where a young Mason jumped four stories and shattered his leg in the process. The pain in his leg is a constant reminder to him of how he fought to keep his brothers and sister together by living in less than ideal conditions. Yes, Mason is furious, but the way he treats Charlotte is despicable and unfair. His humanity does show through with how he has protected and taken care of his siblings since he was a young man. But will he be able to keep that hatred going against Charlotte as he gets to know her? She is a sweet person willing to sacrifice everything for the love of her family which he can respect, but he can’t forgive her father. Unfortunately, I’m going to have to wait and see how everything turns out in this trilogy because it ends in a cliffhanger. Sigh!
There are many supporting characters including Mason’s brothers Jameson, the rebel, and Gray, the charmer, and his sweet and feisty sister Remi. And of course, there are Charlotte’s selfish and drunken father and her clueless but loving mother who do nothing to lend a hand to the mess they created.
As I said before I love enemies-to-lovers tropes and Net Worth is that and more. There is an age gap in the story which I’m normally not a fan of, but it works for the protagonists. And there is a sinister spin to the book and some intriguing supporting characters that could add a twist to the plot.
I highly recommend this dark vengeful romance that builds slowly and leaves a surprising punch at the end.
Thank you to Ms. Wilde for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.
