MY REVIEW
Catherine Cowles is another new author for me and I enjoy her balance of suspense and the relationship of the main characters. This book is number 5 in The Sutter Lake Series but reads well as a standalone. Yeah, I know. I’m in the middle of a series again.
Anne Foley can’t catch a break. Her life has been a living hell At a young age, she is framed by a boy she loved, sent to juvie, and left on her own by her POS parents. Now she runs Hope House, a safe haven for people like her who need a safe place to stay. When tragedy strikes once again, she needs to make a critical decision to protect her niece and nephew. A decision that will change their lives forever.
Mason Decker is VP of Halo, a security company in Sutter Lake. His attraction to Anne is immediate, but she keeps him at arm’s length. Earning her trust requires patience and perseverance, but her current circumstances warrant his protection which means a fake marriage and a rocky road of people wanting to hurt them. Will they be able to stick together as a team or will their enemies tear them apart?
Anne is a strong and kind woman with a bit of emotional baggage. Just when she thinks her life is starting to look up, another tragic event happens to her leaving her vulnerable and at a loss of what to do next. It brings back so many nasty people in her past who want to take something from her, but this time she has people that have her back and don’t care about her past. She is no longer alone. Her trust is hard to obtain as Mason finds out firsthand. But his generosity and compassion are what make him a keeper and he slowly wins Anne’s confidence. They are such a wonderful couple deserving of much happiness.
I love the many supporting characters from the previous books in the series. Having their love and encouragement is exactly what Anne needs. Ms. Cowles writes bad characters well. Anne’s parents are the scourge of the earth as well as her slimy ex. I couldn’t wait for them to get what they deserved. As for Mason’s spoiled and bitchy sister, Juliette, in my opinion, she needs to grovel a whole lot more to redeem herself.
If you love deeply emotional family stories filled with suspense and retribution, give this book a try. Recommend highly.
