A Laird for the Governess (Lairds of the Isles #1) by Catherine Tinley

A Laird for the Governess

ABOUT THE BOOK

A penniless governess. And the dour Laird of Ardmore.

Lydia Farnham must travel to a remote Scottish island to work for widower Alasdair MacDonald, who doesn’t trust her or her unconventional teaching methods! Yet as his daughter flourishes, so, too, does the intense connection between Lydia and Alasdair. Only she should know better than to fall for the handsome laird when it could leave her without a job, or a home…

MY REVIEW

It’s always a pleasure to read a Catherine Tinley book.  Her characters are strong yet vulnerable as they guard their hearts against the inevitable.

Lydia Farnham is desperate for a governess job after being fired for being too beautiful. Yes, you heard it. Apparently, London’s “gentlemen” can’t keep their hands to themselves and she gets blamed for it. All she wants is a job where she doesn’t have to be vigilant and protect her virtue 24-7. Her work options are limited, so she accepts a job on a remote Scottish island to take care of an invalid little girl. Unfortunately, the girl comes with an extremely handsome widower father.

Laird Alasdair MacDonald is desperate to find a governess for his stubborn and precocious daughter, so when he meets the beautiful Lydia Farnham his doubts about her teaching abilities are front and center. After all, his late wife used her looks to manipulate and create havoc in his life. Little did he know this outsider would wheedle her way into his heart.

Lydia and Alasdair are a beautiful pair and little Mairead is everything to them. Lydia’s unconventional teaching ways are just what Mairead needs to become the confident and determined warrior who learns to walk again. Lydia is used to making herself plain and dowdy to draw attention away from herself. She is indeed beautiful on the outside, but it’s her true kindness and compassion to the MacDonalds and their community that win them all over. I loved watching her learn the islander ways and realizing she is respected there no matter what rank she is in life. Alasdair is a good man who is responsible for his community. He loves his daughter and his island home and wants to protect everyone from outsiders. His distrust of Lydia is warranted considering his bad experience with his stunning late wife. However, the more he is in her company, the more he realizes that Lydia not only looks like an angel, but she has the goodness of an angel, too.

I love the island community. The characters are so likable with their strong sense of family and their more relaxed way of life.

I highly recommend this delightful romance where you will fall in love with the diverse characters, the beautiful setting, and the wonderful sense of community.

Thank you to Ms. Tinley for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.
