MY REVIEW

The effects of technology in this world will have a negative impact on us some day, the terrifying thing is… the future is now!

What would you do if you were accused of committing heinous crimes you don’t remember?

Tommy McGregor, health fanatic with a good office job, is excited about getting the new Intra-body Profiling Examination Application (IPEA), an implant that is attached to his central nervous system which is designed to track one’s health stats on one’s mobile phone.  Little did he know the disturbing and terrifying chain of events the implant would cause in his life.

When Tommy starts getting severe headaches and then having blackouts that coincide with horrible crimes that place him at the scenes, he feels his life is over, but Detective Inspector Valentina who originally tracked down Tommy that led to his incarceration has found evidence that supports his story that the implant made him do it.

Talented author G.D. Parker’s debut crime novel (with an awesome cover) takes us into the Dark Net where people hack internet sites, banks, and now medical apps that can control a person’s actions.  It’s a very interesting and frightening idea that software, in this instance called Black Matter, could actually be possible.

The story is located in South Wales and told from several different perspectives with the identity of the antagonist being kept secret until the end.  It is filled with suspense; in fact, the first few chapters are full of so much action that it kept me wondering, what next?

Most of the characters were unlikeable to me, but that’s okay.  I don’t have to like them.  In fact, I believe that evil, angry, or unlikable characters have more depth.  Tommy is a bit self-centered and naive and the reader feels pity for what happens to him, but it didn’t really change my mind. Valentina is just angry and arrogant and I suppose that is needed for the work she does.

Book number one of Parker’s trilogy is full of thrilling action and adventure, with warning triggers such as violence and strong language.  I recommend this book for techno-crime thriller fans and look forward to reading the rest of the trilogy.

This book was provided as part of a virtual book tour with no expectation of a positive review given.
