I started my book review blog in 2009 and I have read so many outstanding books that I wanted to share them again with my followers on #SegueSaturday. I first posted this review in March 2009. It is a charming, cozy mystery with plenty of humor and interesting characters. Enjoy!
I chose this book because I was interested in reading a book by a fellow Iowan and what fun to find out that the protagonist is a librarian.
Ophelia is an uptight librarian in small-town Iowa who keeps to herself and doesn’t make any waves. And, did I mention she is a witch? Her grandmother and sidekick, Abby, is also a witch and tells Ophelia that her life is in danger.
Enter Rick Davis, mysterious stranger, asking many questions around town. The events that follow are predictable, but the characters are fun and interesting.
This 2006 “Best first” Agatha book nominee, is a fun, enjoyable read for fans of cozy mysteries and witches who try to get answers on the Internet! Continue reading “#SegueSaturday #BookReview: Witch Way to Murder (Ophelia & Abby Mystery #1) by Shirley Damsgaard @avonbooks”

ABOUT THE BOOK
Detective Nic Costa finds himself a stranger in a strange land when he’s sent to infiltrate the mob in a remote part of southern Italy.
Roman police detective Nic Costa has been sent undercover to Italy’s beautiful, remote Calabrian coast to bring in the head of the feared mob, the ‘Ndrangheta, who has offered to turn state witness for reasons of his own.
Hoping to reel in the biggest prize the state police have seen in years, the infamous Butcher of Palermo, Costa, and his team are aware the stakes are high. But the constant deception is taking its toll. Out of their depth in a lawless part of Italy where they are the outcasts, not the men in the hills, with their shotguns and rough justice, the detectives find themselves pitched as much against one another as the mob. As the tension rises, it’s clear the operation is not going to plan. Is Nic Costa getting too close to the enemy for comfort – and is there a traitor among them …? Being plain on the outside was a good aesthetic for a woman planning to commit homicide. It was a style that I liked to call thrift-shop fabulous. It made me a bit of an odd duck, sure, but it kept the human race at a distance, which is just how I liked it.
Afton Morrison’s alter ego, “Animus”, describes her as “a female psychopathic vegetarian librarian with a pet goldfish”. Afton sees herself as doing good by killing evil, but she hasn’t killed yet, she has only dreamed it.
She is stalking a local man who was accused of sexually assaulting women in her town, but no charges were filed. She is going to make him pay, but she has a stalker herself, “The Man in the Shadows”, a person from “the incident” in her past.
I picked up this book because of the female librarian serial killer perspective, but I found Afton’s snarky quips extremely engaging and couldn’t wait to see how she pulled off the murder. The suspense is enthralling not only for what Afton is planning but what is happening to her against her will. The only “bad” thing I can say is that the first book in the series is way too short at 116 pages. Yet another series that I plan to continue. Highly recommend. I am working on my TBR pile and came across this great read. I’m a sucker for scarred heroes and Warwick the Enforcer is no exception.
His left hand was covered with a tight leather glove that matched the mask hiding his face. Holes for his eyes, nose and mouth were cut into the leather, giving him a frightening appearance. His head was encased by a leather helm, completing the frightening view.
As a young boy, his body was burned with acid while watching his parents die by the hand of Balten. After many years as Warwick the Enforcer his time for revenge is near but he wasn’t expecting the distraction of the tall, beautiful, and fiery pilot, Aidan. He was stunned that she did not cringe at his scarred body like all the others. She actually preferred him without the mask. ABOUT THIS BOOK
Felicia Wycliff’s peaceful stroll through the woods turned to disaster when her dachshund bolted after a rabbit. One minute Felicia was running after the determined little dog, the next she was hurled to the ground. Gathering her wits after her tumble, she brushed herself off and continued her pursuit—-right into three mounted knights who blocked her path.
They were so authentic looking. They might’ve stepped from the keep of the nearby castle, Elysian Fields. But the old Norman fortress was a ruin and had been for three hundred years.
“Seize her,” the middle knight ordered, the knight who sat tallest in the saddle.
“Let me go.” She fought, striking out when the two knights grabbed her. “Who the deuce are you?”
“I’m the Captain of the Baron’s Guard, and you are trespassing.”
Kidnapped, her confusion and fear consumed her. But when they rode through the gates of Elysian Fields, the castle looking as formidable as the date it was built, her terror exploded.
When she fell she knew exactly where she was. But where the devil had she landed? Continue reading “#BlogTour #BookReview: Losing Time (Knights in Time #5) by Chris Karlsen @ChrisKarlsen1 @BuoniAmiciPress”

ABOUT THIS BOOK
Even at thirty-seven, with a challenging but rewarding career as a paramedic, Bella Gomez is treated as the baby of the family. It’s made her allergic to anyone meddling, so she chooses to keep mostly to herself. Unfortunately, that doesn’t stop her family from inserting themselves in her life. Nor does it deter the one man she knows she shouldn’t get close to from showing up on her doorstep.
Jasper Greene, an FBI agent with the La Plata County field office, doesn’t even know the meaning of family. His team is his family, which is why–when his boss asks him to keep an eye on his baby sister–Jasper readily complies. Even when the sister in question is a spectacularly developed princess with plenty of attitude.
With a shooter on the loose and corruption running rampant, Bella is a magnet for trouble, and Jasper finds himself with his hands full–in more ways than one. Continue reading “#BlogTour #BookReview: Cabin 12 (Rock Point #2) by Freya Barker @freya_barker @BuoniAmiciPress #romanticsuspense”

ABOUT THIS BOOK
Bramfield, near Leeds, a sleepy little market town nestled on the borders of West and North Yorkshire. Detectives Stewart Gardener and Sean Reilly discover the naked corpse of Alex Wilson, nailed to the wall of a cellar in his uncle’s hardware store. His lips are sewn together and his body bears only one mark, a fresh scar near his abdomen.
Within forty-eight hours, their investigation results in dead ends, more victims, no suspects and very little in the way of solid evidence. Gardener and Reilly have a problem and a question on their hands: are the residents of Bramfield prepared for one of history’s most sadistic killers, The Tooth Fairy?
Implant is the perfect read for fans of Peter May, Mark Billingham and Peter James. Continue reading “#BlogTour #BookReview: Implant (Gardener and Reilly Crime Series #3) by Ray Clark @T1LOM @UrbaneBooks #lovebooksgrouptours #IMPLANT”
The photo of the Black Hills National Forest on the cover had caught her eye and she thumbed through it, settling on Rapid City as the closest she could get and still feel anonymous.
Hayley Turner is a young woman with a secret. Arriving in yet another destination to escape the horror of her past, she meets Chris “Shooter” Sullivan, war hero, biker, landlord, and a man that seems to dislike her. Should she leave before he finds out?
Shooter Sullivan moved back to Rapid City after the horrors of Iraq to open his custom motorcycle shop. His life was at an even keel with business and his buddies, when beautiful and lonely Hayley Turner shows up hiding something in her past. Should he trust her?
This story evoked powerful emotions in me. It depicts two people who have had devastating things happen to them in the past and who discover their path to peace and happiness in each other. The way Ms. West draws Hayley’s past out is sensitive and credible and the suspense that follows is intense. Both characters were well-developed and presented well, and I can’t wait to read about Shooter’s buddies in the rest of the series.
If you like broken heroes and heroines and romantic suspense, I recommend this book.

A HAUNTED MAN.
A BURIED PAST.
A JOURNEY INTO DARKNESS.
The title of Wright’s third book in the Detective J.T. Ellington series, caught my eye as I was browsing NetGalley one day, so after debating if I should read the third book in a series I had never read, I downloaded it and the rest is history.
Set in the tumultuous 1960s among the Vietnam War, ghetto rioting, and the rise of a militant antiwar movement, Joseph Ellington is swept from Bristol to Harlem, to New Orleans, and finally to Barbados inside of just a few days. The telegram he receives from his cousin Vic (a man with questionable business practices) is short and to the point “Joseph Stop I sincerely regret to inform you of the death of your sister Bernice May Ellington Stop Request you make arrangements to return to Barbados to settle affairs Stop.” Joseph’s journey to Barbados is laden with violence, death and family secrets that will change his life forever. Maddie had no idea how many laws she’d broken in the last week. They all paled next to kidnapping. Since she’d been advised not to leave the state, she was pretty sure having temporary custody wouldn’t get her anywhere in court. Not that it mattered. She’d never get to court. She’d die before she gave Jesse up.
Maddie and her baby nephew, Jesse, are on the run from his father and the man who murdered her sister and her boyfriend. She heads to her boyfriend’s home in Galveston only to run into a charming cowboy named Zach who she shoots over a misunderstanding. To Maddie’s joy and distress, the attraction is instant and the passion is hot and heavy, but the murderer could find her any time and, unfortunately, she has to leave Zach and this town soon.
People were killed every day because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Zach has fallen head over heels for Maddie and her nephew, but is she “one of the damaged strays” that his sister says he likes to rescue? He can protect her from the dangers that she fears, but how can he get her to stay with him?

Nikos was having a bad day. Not an ordinary bad day, but a ‘your-wife-burned-alive-in-a-spaceship’ kind of bad day. Space travel is murder. Every time a ship goes up, the cosmonaut inside it dies. Why? No one knows, but that’s the way it has always been on New Amith. Nevermind that people from the sister planet of Shan can zip through outer space with no problem. Getting answers to all of this means that Nikos has to dig deeper. It means following lunatic prophecies into catacombs of grief, insomnia, and, yes, some madness. It means uncovering a plot to end the world. And if the world does happen to end, it also means looking past the mushroom clouds to keep going. Because there is a purpose to all of this, there must be. There’s a reason a woman locked in a cell wrote on her wall: We Should Be Called Rome. Visions is a psychological thriller set in rural England. The year is 1985. It’s been 12 years since Eleanor escaped London, discarding the fragments of her tragic past to discover a new life. She is hiding in a remote country village, a place where she truly believes she is safe.
Her neighbour, James Barton-Wells is desperate to save his historic country house from ruin but this has attracted the attention of a wealthy property developer from London whose seemingly altruistic offer to ‘bankroll the restoration’ masks a sinister game plan. Suspicious of his motives, Eleanor consults her friend, Charles Bailey. But Charlie has his own story, fearful that Perry Hampton is the man who undoubtedly destroyed his own life.
The characters are drawn together in a battle to save Westbourne House, oblivious to the menace that surrounds them. Threats, stalking and deception lie at the root of the Hamptons evil. Yet it is not until Eleanor comes face to face with them, she recognises a deadly enemy from the past.
Can Eleanor unravel the clues that conceal an evil crime committed in the 70s? This book will draw you into a world of suspense with shocking psychological twists you will never see coming… Continue reading “#BookTour #BookReview: Visions (Same Face Different Place Book 2) by Helen Christmas @SFDPBeginnings @rararesources”
