ABOUT THE BOOK
They say love never dies…
Devastated and lost, Former British Intelligence officer Alec McKinley knows he must move on. Still, he can’t forget the love of his life. The woman he tried so hard to protect and failed. When Alec arrives at the trial that will determine the fate of those responsible for destroying his world, he discovers how deep the lies run.
Mercedes Elliot has suffered through a lifetime’s worth of trauma, but finally, the end seems near. The trial that could free her from witness protection is around the corner, which means Alec will be waiting for her at last. She can’t wait to drop the charade she’s been living. But when Mercedes returns, she finds Alec isn’t alone and everything she thought she knew is a lie. There’s no one left to trust.
Deceptions run deep, and Alec grows more and more desperate to protect Mercedes, even as she is slipping through his fingers. Can he keep her alive long enough to prove he has never forgotten her? Or will evil succeed this time…
I admit I didn’t have time to read book 1 in the series, but I had no problem following what was going on in book 2. Ms. Asher’s characters are strong, stubborn, and loyal. Unrequited love has always frustrated me when the characters are just idiots and won’t admit their true feelings. Alec and Mercedes have gone through a lot thinking they have lost each other only to have been victims of lies and deceit that could destroy them altogether.
Mercedes is brave and determined to stay alive in WITSEC to testify against the vile Marcus Cooper who would easily kill her at the drop of a hat. When she is being moved to a new safe house, things go terribly wrong leading to heartache and a host of misunderstandings. I don’t want to spoil the rest of the story.
Alec jumps to conclusions and almost loses the only woman he loves, but he comes to the rescue once again and they are forced to be together. With that being said, he’s never going to let her go again.
I really like Mercedes and Alec’s story as they will go through hell to be together. Mercedes is confident and I love her style when she turns on Brendan Whitley, the asshole US Attorney who is responsible for making her life a living hell. Alec almost loses Mercedes by being stupid, but she is everything to him and he shows her just how much.
The supporting characters are many. The most notable to me was Federal Marshall Noah Ramirez who is a godsend to Mercedes. I was also on the fence with Adam Wilson, Marcus Cooper’s right-hand man, who surprised me. The evil characters are extremely nasty including Jason Hollis, Mercedes’ abusive ex, and Tyler Cooper, Marcus’ slimy son.
Overall, I loved this exciting romantic suspense novel filled with a whole lot of action, an abundance of twists and turns, and a deserving happily ever after ending.
Thank you to Ms. Asher for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.
