MY REVIEW
Holy Menace! I adore Jennifer Millikin’s novels, and Hard Feelings is so much fun! She can make me laugh out loud one minute and fall head over heels the next. This story is a case of actions speaking louder than words, and, boy, are they memorable! From a drunken wedding in Vegas to the road trip from hell, this story is fabulous!
Cecily Hampton is prickly, passionate, and stubborn with an intensity that keeps things interesting. She’s a complicated puzzle, but under the unwavering compassion of her new husband, she starts to unfold beautifully. She moves away from her dysfunctional family in search of peace, but then her Savage Grandma drops a bombshell: a family trip through Arizona in an RV. Spoiler alert: things go hilariously awry, turning this trek into a laugh-out-loud, come-to-Jesus group therapy session that wonderfully opens the gates of love and forgiveness.
Dominic Bellinger is the ultimate book boyfriend! I honestly lost count of how many times I swooned over him. He’s kind, considerate, patient, protective, and, oh my goodness, he’s nerdy sexy. Although he’s stuck on this chaotic family trip by default, he loves a challenge, and Cecily definitely presents one! He’s adorable when he’s high, he hates her deathtrap of a Jeep, and wait for this… he wants to exist in her orbit. Sigh!
When Cecily finally lets Dom in, allowing him to see her vulnerable side, I was practically melting. Their nicknames for each other are right on. She’s Menace, and he’s Satan’s Errand Boy, and their banter is sexy, playful, and simply the best part of the story. The chemistry between them is off-the-charts! That first kiss? Yummy! Between the sexual mishap involving milk, Malibu Dom, glamping, and the haunted hotel, I was captivated and wished it wouldn’t end.
The family trip is a highlight arranged by the woman Cecily loves most, Savage Grandma (nicknamed for her blunt honesty). Cecily’s sister, Kerrigan, has no filter; her brother, Duke, is aloof; her dad is cold and unyielding; and her mom is not present. Watching these characters forced to share a cramped space is like the perfect prescription for their relationship troubles, as they slowly start to open up, rediscovering the love they desperately crave.
If you’re into romcoms that involve genuine characters and hilarious escapades, you must check out Hard Feelings. Trust me; you won’t regret it!
