MY REVIEW
This book totally transported me back to the 1980s—a decade where time felt like it stood still, with no internet or smartphones to distract us. I was drawn in not just by the nostalgia, but by a beautiful love story that gave me all the feels.
Emma, the eldest of four siblings, has taken on the heavy role of caregiver in her chaotic household. Her mother’s battle with alcoholism and her father’s heavy workload add a layer of tension to her life, making her search for peace at the lake with her little sister all the more important. It’s in this tranquil setting that she meets Teddy, a rich boy there for the summer whose kindness and devotion transform her world in ways she never expected.
Emma feels so broken and alone in a family that doesn’t appreciate her, and Teddy shows her time and time again that he has her back. There were moments when I felt my heart breaking for her as she wrestled with feelings of unworthiness. But amid their honesty, she starts to bloom, finding confidence as she realizes she deserves love and care.
What I absolutely loved about Teddy was his unwavering integrity, thoughtfulness, and compassion. He truly embodies the kind of love that sees beyond circumstances. His commitment to Emma is something so pure it made my heart melt. Here’s a guy who’s ready to sacrifice everything for the girl he loves, and it’s incredible how deeply he believes in her potential, even when she struggles to believe in herself.
I was also curious to see how Emma’s family dynamic would evolve throughout the book. It was heartening to watch them grow alongside Emma and Teddy, eventually becoming a support system for the couple. And Teddy’s family? Well, let’s just say he’s better off without most of them, except for his Aunt Stephanie, who shines as the loving figure he needed.
One of my favorite features in Ms. Mansour’s debut novel is the use of letters between the protagonists. There’s something so special about putting feelings into words on paper that just can’t be replicated with technology today.
If you want to be whisked away to a time when love letters were the norm and heartfelt connections grew against all odds, then you’ve got to grab this book. It’s a beautiful reminder of the power of love and resilience, and I guarantee it will linger with you long after you turn the last page.
