The Diary of a Late Bloomer; A quirky coming of age novel
by L.M.L Gil
Publication date: June 29, 2020
Genres: Coming of Age, New Adult, Romance, Sports

Synopsis:

Every wallflower blooms at their own perfect time, but some like quirky Lo, take longer than others.

Lo is a sheltered 20-year-old who loves baking, manga/anime, and octopi. When she spots her college swim team’s tryout flyer sporting her favorite sea creature, an octopus she knows it’s a sign that she must join the Flying Octopi. The only things standing her way are her socially awkward nature and the fact that she just learned to swim.

Will Lo find her place to shine or will her social anxiety DQ her dreams?

Late Bloomer is a new adult novel that is a cross between Bridget Jones’s Diary, Baywatch, and Kuragehime.

MY REVIEW

I loved this refreshing coming of age romance that follows the quirky, caring, and extremely brave Lo. Her social awkwardness is cringeworthy but endearing. Her ability to stay happy and supportive through the most undeserved of times is a testament to her determination of overcoming her insecurities and panic attacks. Though I wasn’t happy with the way people treated her at first and felt sad with her tendency to blame herself for others’ actions, her courage grows and her true self outshines the haters and bullies.

In addition, the supporting characters are so important for Lo’s growth and confidence. They include the socially distant and grumpy Nick who always keeps his promise, the confused and clueless Martin who can’t see what’s in front of him, the beautiful and insecure Britany, and Lo’s unusual and loving family.

Written in journal style, Lo adds a list of funny and enlightening Plans of Attack at the end of each day that progress and become more assertive and uplifting as she tackles adulthood.

Overall, I’m so glad I chose to review this beautifully written novel about social outcasts and young men and women learning how to become adults in their own way whether it be school, relationships, work, or family issues.  Another favorite to add to my growing 2020 list.

Thank you to Ms. Gil for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.
