Just a Boyfriend (Friends, #1) by Lucy Keeling
ABOUT THE BOOK
What do mascara wands and gardening shears have in common?
Absolutely nothing! At least that’s what wannabe beauty influencer Sophie Timney thinks when her friend Polly suggests involving her brother Marcus in Sophie’s make-up tutorials. She needs more views, Marcus needs promotion for his gardening business – in Polly’s mind joining forces will help them both. Sophie isn’t so sure.
Because Marcus Bowman has a habit of getting under her skin in a way that no exfoliating face scrub ever could. But, as the views and comments on her videos begin creeping up, it becomes increasingly obvious that Sophie’s subscribers like Marcus, and what’s even worse is that Sophie might be starting to feel the same way …
MY REVIEW
I have discovered there is no better recommendation than from a favorite author. Previously entitled Make It Up To You, this LOL romcom is a fun everyone-can-see-it-afraid-to-commit love story sure to tickle your funny bone.
She really disliked how she felt like a schoolgirl, all giddy at the start of the day and at the end of the day when he would have to come in and talk to her, and then wind her up to such an extent that she got angry again.
Always in control, Sophie is a social media influencer and bartender just trying to make a go at make up videos, but her numbers are falling and she needs to improve her following. So when her friend and landlady Mya tells her to try posting a garden make over for her home, Sophie reluctantly agrees. It’s her friend Polly’s brother, Marcus, and he’s always getting a rise out of her…and there’s the time he kissed her last year. But she didn’t want a relationship. She just wanted to succeed at “bringing her passion to life”. But Marcus looks so good working in the garden with his shirt off…
She was powerful, confident, and hot as hell and he liked all of it… a lot. More than he was comfortable with.
Marcus has it bad. After Sophie rejected him last year, he can’t help but push her buttons to see the sparkle in her eyes and the blush on her cheeks. She’s fascinating and beautiful and he can’t help be attracted to her. In the meantime, he will do anything to get her to commit to his future game plan.
Who would ever think making a man over on social media would be so hot?! There’s lots of chemistry between Sophie and Marcus and told in both their points of view it is delightful watching them come to terms with that attraction. However, I’m not a big fan Sophie at first because she comes across as a self-obsessed workaholic who is just rude and hostile towards Marcus who, in my opinion, doesn’t deserve it. I had to laugh at how Marcus eggs her on and playfully antagonizes her, because it’s exactly the way my husband gets under my skin. Marcus is hard-working, amusing, and sweet who definitely deserves a medal for putting up with Sophie’s unwarranted animosity. What can I say? Love is blind.
In addition, I love Sophie’s supportive and candid friends Paige, the kitten mom and reverse psychologist, Polly (Marcus’ sister), the serial dater, and Mya, the woman with a secret job. I also enjoy Bailey who is definitely hiding something and the calm and wise, Joseph. I can’t wait to hear more about their stories.
I enjoyed this pleasant and playful romance because of the interesting social media influencing aspect, the entertaining characters and the humorous situations such as Sophie’s uncut contouring video.
