Opposites Attract (First Comes Love #1) by Camilla Isley

Opposites Attract

ABOUT THE BOOK

First law of magnetism: opposite poles attract.

Single mom Vivian has been burned by love once before, and her job as a divorce lawyer has presented enough evidence to convince her there are no good men left in New York City.

The worst offender is her new neighbor: Dr. Lucas Keller, a couple’s therapist whose piercing blue eyes and flawless dark hair are just as annoying as his bad temper.

But when Luke starts poaching Vivian’s clients by saving their marriages, she makes it her mission to force him out of the building to save her practice. But it’s Luke who gives her the perfect opportunity when he proposes an unexpected bet.

With their offices at stake, Vivian and Luke play the field of love in a fierce battle of wits that quickly turns hot and personal, especially when Vivian’s daughter gets involved. Now, taking down Luke has become more than business for Vivian. It’s become a pleasure—and soon, Vivian and Luke will realize how pointless it is to fight the laws of attraction.

MY REVIEW

And the gloves are off! What do you get when you put a couple’s counselor and a divorce attorney in the same room? You get a bet, some blind dates, donuts, and a whole lot of comedic relief!

In this corner is Dr. Lucas Keller, aka The Client-Poaching Ogre or Shrink Shrek for short. He loves his job. Prefers the glass half full. Funny. A morning person. An omnivore. A dog person. Spontaneous. Likes action movies. A soppy romantic. Has a bad temper, especially around a certain Medusa of an attorney. And he hasn’t met the right person yet. The most important thing to him in life is LOVE.

In this corner (actually, the nicer corner office) is Vivian Hessington, aka The Wicked Witch of the West Office. A formidable divorce attorney. A single mother of a teenage daughter. Thinks shrinks are charlatans. Prefers the glass half empty. A hopeless romantic. A night owl. A flexitarian (look it up). A cat person. A control freak. Likes comedies and romantic movies. Has terrible taste in men. And after her daughter, LOVE is the most important thing in her life.

Luke and Vivian hit the ground running trading insults and pushing each other’s buttons. They are the quintessential enemies-to-lovers who perform a hilarious and frustrating angry/attraction dance that just keeps getting better and better as you read on. Luke is a good guy with good intentions and I really like how he is the adult in the relationship. Vivian is just way beyond rude and bitchy for me. I seriously have a hate-hate relationship with the woman. But cupid has shot his arrow and, in their case, opposites attract. I did enjoy Vivian’s daughter Tegan who is important to Luke and Vivian’s relationship. Tegan’s therapy with Luke is a unique and necessary means to help her and Vivian come to terms with Tegan’s absentee father.

The side-splitting blind dates from hell range from a witch, a ditz, a flat-earther, a Tolstoy wannabe, and a momma’s boy. Even funnier, are the teasing and wisecracks Vivian and Luke make to each other adding to the tension.

One thing I was a little frustrated with was the epilogue told in Max the Dog and Priscilla the Cat’s perspectives. It was cute, but not what I was looking for when it comes to a happy romantic ending.

Overall, this is a charming and fun romantic comedy full of many LOL moments as well as some serious topics such as bullying, abandonment, and teenage drinking.

For another treat, please take a look at my review of book 6 in the First Comes Love series You May Kiss the Bridesmaid.

Thank you to Ms. Isley for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.
