Scorn of Secrets by B. Truly
ABOUT THE BOOK
I must keep it locked away—the memory of my darkest secret….
When the rising tides of my life peak, I’m left struggling with the currents of the storm. The first dilemma is my dad’s gambling debt. Mama bounces back quickly from the ramifications it causes. She proves this by getting a new man. Her Rico Suave is just the tip of the iceberg—she moves us across state to live with him and his two sons.
My outgoing, older sister fits right in—she’s the total opposite of me. I am Madison Guillory, the shy, quiet type. Taught to make the best of even the worst situations, I contemplate giving my new family a chance.
Living with my future stepbrothers is interesting, to say the least. They’re like night and day. I have more in common with the laid-back brother, and we become instant friends. I’m adjusting to Taylor High, and the arrogant brother is even starting to grow on me. Maybe everything will work out after all.
My life finally seems to be falling into place until a dreadful night shatters my dreams. My world is flipped upside down because of the consequences I must now bear.
The memories of that night lurk in the shadows to torment me. If I think of what happened, I’ll succumb to my fear. His face has scorned me. No one will believe me if I confess, not even my own sister. I hold the key to my darkest secret, desperate to keep it locked away.
MY REVIEW
This story filled me with anxiety, anger, and heartbreak as Madison’s secrets just kept getting worse when the people she loved wouldn’t stand by her.
Madison lost her father in a tragic way and when her bitch of a mother, Charlotte, latched on to a new sugar daddy within a month of Madison’s beloved father’s death it was appalling. As she was dealing with her father’s murder, her mother uproots Madison and her sister Tanya to live in another state with Regan, her mother’s new lover. When Madison meets Regan’s twin sons, Jackson and Justin her life will never be the same again. Her friendship with Justin grows into much, much more, until one disturbing and painful night changes everything.
Madison is a smart, kind, honest young woman who loves to read and gets straight As in school. She has high morals and a good heart which isn’t enough to get her out of the awful situation she finds herself in. Justin is a thoughtful and mature young man who would do anything for Madison, but her secret has torn them apart. He is a hero in my book for how he stands up for her till the end. And the ending is a frickin’ cliffhanger. Uh uh, nope. After all that turmoil and heartache let’s hope something good happens in the sequel.
And supporting characters…Regan is a good, kind man and an idiot for falling for one of the vilest poor excuses of a mother I’ve ever seen. Charlotte is a self-absorbed snake who made my skin crawl. Add to that, her nasty daughter and Madison’s sister Tanya who is a chip off the ole block. I don’t want to leave a spoiler about who the foulest character is, but let me just say this person should be drawn and quartered. Yep. That bad.
If you like tragic love stories with a wide range of shallow and compelling characters including a strong female antagonist who finally stands up for herself after a serious plot twist full of triggers, give this book a try.
Thank you to Ms. Truly for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.

My pleasure, Brandy. I was exhausted by the end of the book, but in a good way. Well done!
Thanks so much. I 1st started working on that novel 27 years ago when I was 15. I’m glad it made an impact.
