The terrifying part? I’m starting to think past me knew exactly what she was doing.
MY REVIEW
Oh man, where do I even start with this book? My emotions are all over the place in a wonderful way! I seriously can’t believe I’ve never read a Karla Sorensen book before now. My bad!!!
Mercy is a fierce woman with the vocabulary of a sailor, and let me tell you, she is a force to be reckoned with. Despite her hardships, she’s got a heart of gold that shines through even in the darkest moments.
At first, Grant seems like a rather stuffy British man, but once you get to know him, you realize he’s a good-hearted person trying to live by his own principles with the woman who matters most to him.
From the start, I knew I’d love this story. The connection they had is stunning, even when Mercy has amnesia and can’t remember the beautiful moments they shared. There was both a funny and sad aspect to the way they interacted, with an underlying need for each other. It was refreshing and real, especially when the future seemed so uncertain.
The emotional depth of this book is unlike anything I’ve experienced in a long time. Seriously, I was sobbing through most of it. It’s one of those stories that lingers long after the last page, leaving you feeling lighter even after all the weight of the feelings it stirred up. I can genuinely say I will be rereading it soon, and I don’t do that very often.
If you’re not typically a fan of amnesia tropes, don’t let that dissuade you from picking this one up. It completely shattered my preconceptions. The writing is remarkable as we look at the relationship through Mercy’s eyes as she slowly uncovers the truth of her past and rediscovers herself in the process. And let’s not forget how Grant is affected. My heart broke for him, especially knowing the woman he adored may never remember the glorious love they once shared. One of my favorite Grant quotes is: “Earning Mercy’s love once was hard enough. Twice, or until she remembered it was there, might prove impossible.”
I’ll include this book on my list of favorite books of 2026. I simply can’t recommend it enough!
