Starting Again in Silver Sands Bay by Karen Louise Hollis

Starting Again in Silver Sands Bay

ABOUT THE BOOK

Becki is fifty and a single mum to eleven-year-old Jemima, after being widowed five years ago.

Dan is forty-eight and a single dad to eleven-year-old Freddie, after his wife left him five years ago.

They have both given up on love. But when they all go to Silver Sands Bay on the Lincolnshire coast for the summer, will they be able to put the past behind them and find love again?

MY REVIEW

Second-chance love tropes are one of my favorites and this feel-good story involves two single parents who overcome their fear of falling in love again with a little help from their children.

The story is told in the third-person point of view from three different perspectives. Becki is a widow and single mom off on holiday to Silver Sands Bay to connect with her snarky eleven-year-old daughter, Jem. Dan is a divorced father on holiday with his son, Freddie, to get a well-earned break from his busy job. When Jem and Freddie meet they put their heads together to matchmake their parents. The third perspective comes in later with Becki’s sister, Lizzie, who joins in the fray to make sure her big sis starts a new chapter in her life.

Becki and Dan are an instant attraction with their kind and generous natures. Dan doesn’t seem as indifferent to relationships as you might think considering his ex left him and her son for another man. Dan’s great relationship with his son and his easy-going personality is a real plus. Becki is a little hesitant to move on because of the loss of her husband, but with Jem’s surprisingly sage advice, she takes the plunge. The little family unit they make is remarkably sweet considering blended families can be tough. There is a little angst when Dan’s selfish and immature ex comes back, but Dan steps up and sets her straight because Becki has captured his heart.

It’s been a while since I’ve read a cozy clean romance and maybe I’m jaded, but I couldn’t get into it. Yes, it’s nice to see two people connect on a lovely holiday and their kids getting on swimmingly, but it felt repetitive and boring to me. On a better note, the scenery sounds beautiful and the many activities they participated in looked fun.

If you love sweet romances with cute conniving kids, adorable pets, and beautiful scenery, give this book a try.

Thank you to Ms. Hollis for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.
