My Own Protector (Savannah Heroes #2) by Harper Michaels

ABOUT THE BOOK

Molly Franks hates life in the limelight. That’s why she jumped at the chance to just be an anonymous pre-med student at Crestwood University. She changed her name and took a chance that no one would recognize her for her famous father’s accomplishments. So, when she meets the guy assigned to protect her, she is not amused, even if he is hot as hell. Why does she always have to be different?

John O’Rourke has no desire to babysit a college student. When he was first assigned Molly’s case, he dreaded following around the young woman. Once he meets her, everything changes. He knows she is meant to be his, and when she suggests he needs a cover, he immediately volunteers to be her fake boyfriend. What could go wrong with a fake relationship when the two people involved desire each other? Oh, just about everything…

MY REVIEW

Molly Franks is a nerdy, insecure, virginal college student who is forced to get a bodyguard because of her father’s work. Enter the hot, handsome, Irishman, John O’Rourke, who, despite her objections, guards her body a little more closely than predicted.

My first Harper Michaels novel which happens to be the second book in the Savannah Heroes series was an average read for me.  Overall, it wasn’t a bad story. I liked the concept and the characters weren’t bad.  However, while I appreciated the concept and the characters, the whole insta-love trope had me scratching my head a bit. I mean, one moment Molly is this shy, introverted girl, and the next, she’s throwing herself at John with an enthusiasm that felt a tad unrealistic. It’s a classic case of insta-love, but I couldn’t help but feel my suspension of disbelief was stretched a bit too thin.

In addition, I was a little frustrated with John. This guy has a job to do, yet he seems more preoccupied with his budding romance than actually keeping Molly safe. I get it; he’s handsome and charming, but come on, priorities, man.

I have to say the writing itself was pretty solid. The suspense elements were delivered well, keeping me engaged throughout the story. However, I did find some of the plot twists predictable, and I figured out the villain quite early on. Not exactly the thrilling surprise I was hoping for.  Perhaps the romance was a bit too intense for my liking using “my heart is completely hers” while not even a quarter way through the book.

If you’re looking for a fast-paced, sugary romantic read with a sprinkle of suspense, this book might just be your jam. Despite some of my reservations, I think it offers just the right dose of romance for those who love their love stories to move at lightning speed.

Thank you to Ms. Michaels for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive read.
