Have you ever wondered what really happens to Santa Claus letters?  In Detroit and Sarasota some children’s letters are diverted and reviewed by Nick Archer, a religiously obsessed, narcissist. Nick responds, leaving a trail of devastation in the two cities.

In Detroit, co-ed partners and wise-cracking lovers, detectives Jaq McSween and David Maxwell, team up with Sarasota detectives Abel Mendoza and his partner, Rabbit, to find this daunting killer.

When Jaq’s friend, the lovely nurse, Rita Rose, takes a chance on love again, she gets caught in Nick’s web. Working with the ME, she joins in, adding her perspective when events take a sinister turn.

Can this diverse team of characters pool their insights, barbs, and taste for bad food to save Rita when she discovers the final clues or will she become the next victim?

MY REVIEW

“This one has vivid religiously bent messages and—well. Is recreating an actual plague.”

Rita Rose was trying to move forward, but her past hung over her head.  The gossips will never be truly satisfied that she, a nurse, was set up by her ex fiance and then acquitted of driving drunk and killing a jogger.  As a result she is relegated to the Medical Examiner’s office assisting with autopsies.  Then along comes a handsome airline pilot, Nick Archer, who sweeps her off her feet promising to protect her and make her happy as his wife.  Is he too good to be true?

When Chief Hanusack’s brother-in-law is murdered in Detroit, Detectives David Maxwell and Jaqueline “Jaq” McSween are assigned to the case and with the help of Medical Examiner, Dr. Towers and his new assistant, Rita, soon find out it is the work of a serial killer who thinks he is the savior of children.

“A lesson for you, little lady. Your little girls don’t like it when you beat them with the handball paddles—meant for the game, not their behinds.”

When there are more serial killings reported in Florida, they join forces with Detectives Abel Mendoza and Ronald “Rabbit” Randall to solve the killings before it’s too late.  Will they be able to find the killer before he kills someone close to home?

I chose to review this novel because I’m interested in stories about serial killers.  The reason for the killings and how they were done is unique and the killer himself is arrogant and truly evil incarnate.  I was a bit disappointed in Rita’s character thinking she would have been smarter after being fooled the first time.  Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.  If you like to read about suspense thrillers that include serial killers with a twisted thought process, and, best of all, a series, this is the book for you.
