No Ordinary Girl by Cheryl Elaine

ABOUT THE BOOK

What started out as a night of celebration for Aimee soon turned into a nightmare. Snatched by cruel, sadistic monsters – the worst creatures mankind has ever produced – she’s thrown into a metal container, among other victims too frightened to make a single sound.

The game-keepers force everyone to play. They deliver torment and pain in equal measure. Every hunter has their own agenda and reasons to maim and torture.

Detective Johnson is one step away from catching the killers. Wrestling with his instincts as a father to serve justice his own way, this is no ordinary case for him. Can he stop the vile sadists before they damage more young girls, as well as his own daughter?

Aimee’s ordeal within the compound brings her to the conclusion that she’s no ordinary girl. But can she hang onto her sanity long enough to escape? And will she find a different way to play?

This crime thriller will keep you riveted. It’s no ordinary story.

MY REVIEW

I realised that I wasn’t in a room at all, but some sort of metal container. From the muffled sobs and sniffles, and counting the different sets of eyes, I figured there were at least seven others in there with me.

Aimee wanted to celebrate her acceptance of her new dream job with her best friend, but they had no idea that the night and the days following would be a nightmare that they would never forget.   After being tortured and raped by the gamekeepers who provide human prey for sadistic serial killers paying lots of money to hunt and torture victims, she finds the strength to kill one of her captors and call the police.  However, she hides from the police and plans her revenge for the monsters who did this to her and to the other victims.  Will she ever be satisfied in playing this macabre game of revenge?

The things Detective Johnson had seen in Liverpool several months earlier were unthinkable and his missing daughter, Anne, wasn’t found.  He was feeling the pressure to catch the gang known as the gamekeepers who were behind these heinous acts.  When the police tracked down a call from a missing girl named Aimee stating that she was being abused by these very men, Johnson and several police teams came upon a haunting sight of mutilated and burnt bodies, several miles from the city, with no sign of Aimee, the caller.  Though the police caught some of the criminals, several got away.  Will he ever find his daughter, and will this gang and it’s Boss ever be stopped?

This story is truly a terrifying depiction of human depravity. The physical and mental abuse of the victims is deeply painful to read and the payback that is dished out to the perpetrators is justified, but at a cost to the punisher’s mental health.

The nightmares and the memories still refused to go; I came to terms with the fact I’d been thoroughly tainted. My soul, polluted by evil and sin. The anger felt like poison running through my veins, driving me to fulfill my need. I vowed to continue my work until all the monsters were gone.

Wow! This story is emotionally draining and I was shocked and horrified at the graphic scenes. However, I could not put the book down!  As one who has read several true crime novels of serial killers and such, I know that these horrific things really do happen, but to see it described in graphic detail is still hard to take.  This book is not for the squeamish.  If you prefer cringe-worthy horror stories with a bit of Hunger Games, Saw and The Purge mixed in, buy this book!
