Emma Beware (YA Suspense #1) by Michelle Iden

ABOUT THE BOOK

A stalker is like having your own personal terrorist assigned to you.

A high school girl’s life is about to change. A standout student and track athlete in Eden, Iowa she gears up for a big meet. She does not show. So unlike her.

My name is Emma Mae Davenport. I’m 14. In the past few weeks, I’ve been stalked through text messages by an unknown person. Each time they’ve masked their identity. I’ve also received gifts at places where nobody knew I’d be. I’ve vanished without a trace. Am I alive or dead?

Time is ticking as four of Emma’s friends armed with cyber-techno skills rush to unravel mysterious clues. They discover nefarious doings.
HINT: Betrayal and love go hand in hand.

MY REVIEW

When a young girl is stalked and kidnapped, her friends make a pact to do everything they can to find her.

I was originally interested in this book because it is a YA suspense series set in my home state of Iowa.  Imagine my delight when I find out Emma’s peaceful hometown is Eden, Iowa, minus about 4,000+ people, which is about 30 miles from my home.

Emma is “a track sprinter, math-athlete, designer extraordinaire” who lives with her emotionally distant single mother. Her friends and her faith are very important to her and when she needs them the most, they come through for her. There is a stalker watching Emma and she only has a few days until tragedy strikes. Can her friends find her before it’s too late?

I admire Emma’s strength and mental savviness that gets her out of a dangerous situation. Her friends are also a compelling part of the story and prove how extremely loyal they are to her. And let’s not forget her estranged pistol packin’ Grammy Helen, who comes to the rescue.

Overall, I like this suspense-filled young adult story with Christian fiction undertones, but it is a bit disjointed at times with a choppy narrative. If you like strong nerdy heroines with a quirky group of friends and a bit of romance, give this book a try.

Thank you to Ms. Iden for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.
