Cooking for Cannibals by Rich Leder

ABOUT THE BOOK

Fountain of youth? More like murderous medication!

Carrie Kromer pushes the boundaries of science, not her social life. The brilliant behavioral gerontologist’s idea of a good time is hanging out with her beloved lab rats and taking care of her elderly mother and the other eccentric old folks at the nursing home. So no one is more surprised than Carrie when she steals the lab’s top-secret, experimental medicine for aging in reverse.

Two-time ex-con Johnny Fairfax dreams of culinary greatness. But when his corrupt parole officer tries to drag him from the nursing home kitchen, the suddenly young-again residents spring to his defence and murder the guy—and then request Johnny cook them an evidence devouring dinner to satisfy their insatiable side-effect appetite.

As their unexpected mutual attraction gets hot, Carrie and Johnny find themselves caught up with the authorities who arrive to investigate the killing. But even more dangerous than the man-eating not-so-senior citizens could be the arrival of death-dealing pharmaceutical hitmen.

Can Carrie and Johnny find true love in all this bloody madness?

MY REVIEW

Who can resist that title? Certainly not me. In addition, the book has all my favorite genres: dark comedy, suspense, horror, and romance. A great combo in a sarcastically funny and gruesome tale about a stolen miracle drug and the crazy lengths people will go to to protect it.

Carrie is the nice geeky girl who loves rats more than people. So when she steals an experimental revolutionary drug destined to be the fountain of youth to help her aging mother, the shit hits the fan, and her life changes forever.

Johnny is a two-time ex-con and a rock star butcher and chef looking for a job before his asshole parole officer sends him back to prison. Ending up as a cook for a bunch of old people wasn’t his first choice, but beggars can’t be choosers. However, the longer he stays, the more his skills come in handy.

What a hilarious and thrilling shitshow of a story. The characters are quirky, evil, unnerving, and freaking awesome. The plot is brilliant and fast-paced with this reader eager to find out how they all get out of the mess they’re in.

The metamorphosis of the Copa team of rest home patients is glorious, creepy, and downright hysterical. You go Copa team!!  In addition, the gripping pursuit to find the missing drugs by the handsome and deadly Latin fixer and the sociopathic Russian cleaner is shocking and intriguing.

If you like a rollercoaster of a thriller filled with partying geriatrics, lab rats, psychopathic hitmen, dodgy parole officers, diehard reporters, dogged cops, an unlikely couple, and a drug to change the world, give this book a try. I guarantee you won’t be able to put it down!

Thank you to Mr. Leder for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.
