Strict Confidence (Rochester Trilogy #2) by Skye Warren

Forbidden. Commanding. Mysterious. Beau Rochester has an entire house full of secrets. And those secrets are putting Jane Mendoza in danger.

She fell in love with the one man she can’t have. She should leave Maine to protect her heart, but the thread refuses to be severed. The brooding Mr. Rochester and his grieving niece are more than her job. They’re her new family.

She races against time to find answers and protect the people she loves. The cliffside grows dark with the misdeeds of the past. Her heart and her sanity fight a battle, but they are both at risk.

Will Mr. Rochester learn to trust Jane? And will that trust destroy her?

My bad. I must read a series from the beginning and not blindly start in the middle. Apparently, I missed a great deal not reading book 1 first. This book begins in the aftermath of a house fire that appears to be arson. Beau was apparently sleeping with the nanny and has vowed to never do it again. With all of the sexual tension and Beau’s jealousy that is very unlikely.

Jane knows what it feels like to be abandoned. She grew up in the foster system. When Beau Rochester, her boss, grows hot and cold about their relationship, she’s unsure what will happen to her. Let alone the threats from the bullying police detective, Joe Causey, who has a grudge against Beau and is pointing his finger at Jane for the arson. Will Beau send her away to keep her safe? Her heart will break if she has to leave the two people she has grown to love, Beau and her six-year-old charge, Paige.

Beau is a tortured soul who is trying to protect Paige and Jane from his bad choices. Who would benefit from setting his house on fire? Who is the mysterious woman on the beach? Who is leaving dead rats on the front porch? Though it will rip his heart out, he must ask Jane to leave to save her from himself.

I am a big fan of Jane Eyre and I appreciate Warren’s contemporary take on the story.  Jane is an incredibly forgiving person considering her troubling background. Perhaps it is her naivety and perhaps it is her need for love in her life. Beau has a hard edge about him that isn’t pleasant by any means. He treats Jane like an object and I agree with him that he doesn’t deserve her.  However, as Beau’s story is revealed, it explains his anger and his choice to be alone. They are a very lonely couple who need one another. If only they would accept it.

This is a sexy, gothic romance tinged with mystery. The characters are dark and complex, the venue is on the beautiful coast of Maine, and the story ends in a frustrating cliffhanger. What more could you ask for?

Thank you to Ms. Warren for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.

Let me guess,” she says, her voice quivering. “It’s not me, it’s you.”

“Correct.” It’s not her. She’s beautiful and smart and kind. She has a whole life ahead of her. Meanwhile, I’m a selfish bastard who used her. The fire was a disaster in ten different ways, but there is one small, shining upside. It was also a wake-up call that I desperately needed.

She manages a wry, watery smile. “Don’t worry, Beau. I hear you loud and clear. And I respect your boundaries. I’m not going to take advantage of you.”

Oh, the fucking irony. And worse, she knows it. She knows that I was using her. It’s a little joke at my expense, and I deserve it. What can I say to that sharp awareness? What can I do but fall to my knees and beg her forgiveness? I won’t be able to last a day without her in my arms. I won’t be able to watch her without wanting her.

Jane. I’m dangerous to you. Look at what happened to Emily. Now, look at you, almost burned to a crisp in a fire, small and fragile in a hospital bed—because of me.” Her brow furrows, and I know she means to argue with me. “God, I’m not even good for Paige. You know it. You said it yourself. I snap at her. I argue with her. I’m the problem here.”

Her eyes fill with tears. “You love me. You said you love me.”

It would be better to deny it, to claim I didn’t mean it, but I can’t quite bring myself to lie to her that way. “It doesn’t matter. My love is dangerous.”
