My Dark Romeo by Parker S. Huntington and L. J. Shen (ReelShort)

ABOUT THE STORY

After Romeo Costa ruins Dallas Townsend’s reputation at the debutante ball and forces her into a marriage, Dallas makes a new plan: seduce him, break his rule, and get the family she’s always dreamed of. But Romeo is not easy to break. And Dallas isn’t the type of girl to give up.

MY REVIEW

I was asked by ReelShort (“a short-form video app specializing in rapid-fire, low-budget dramas”) to review a ReelShort video inspired by one of my all-time favorite books, My Dark Romeoand I jumped at the chance to see the story brought to life.

The film does a great job of hitting on the major themes of the story by capturing the mix of action, humor, and the intense drama that unfolds between Dallas and Romeo. Dallas is funny, stubborn, and on a relentless mission to have a baby. Romeo, on the other hand, is the classic brooding billionaire, moody and controlling, determined to push Dallas away.

Gabrielle Faith Brown’s portrayal of Dallas was spot on. Her expressions were genuine, and she brought a delightful energy to the character that I really enjoyed. Romeo, played by John Jamieson Michaels, didn’t quite meet my hopes. I was expecting him to deliver more passion and menace, but his performance came off a tad stiff.

As much as I loved seeing Romeo’s friends, Oliver and Zach, pop up in the film, I was left wanting more. In the book, their conversations with Romeo are hilarious and a good addition to the story, but the actors who portray them did not have the impact I needed.

Creating a short episode from a chapter (or sometimes just a few pages) is no small feat. What’s even more impressive is that this isn’t a one-off project. There are numerous book adaptations listed on ReelShort for your viewing enjoyment!

For those of you who are like me and prefer curling up with a book over watching its film adaptation, I get it. However, if you’re in the mood for a bite-sized, steamy romance condensed into 55 quick clips (each one lasting just one to two minutes), ReelShort could be a fun surprise. They do give you a few episodes for free, but keep in mind that you’ll need to pay for anything beyond that.

Thank you to Crazy Maple Studio for giving me the opportunity to watch this film without expectation of a positive review.
