Hats Off to Love by Kathryn Andrews
ABOUT THE BOOK
If you ask anyone to describe the great state of Kentucky, odds are they’ll most likely answer you with “Bourbon and horses,” but if you me, the only thing I’ll ever respond with is “Derby hats.”
Big hats. Small hats. Elaborate hats. Simple hats. I love them all. Every. Single. One. And because of this, I’ve always known I would one day own a Derby hat store. At twenty-five, I’ve back in my hometown of Louisville, and my dream has finally come true. With the season officially underway, my brand-new shop is gorgeous, the inventory is stocked, and I’m ready to go. My only problem is William Stokes Whitlock III.
Stokes is tall, insanely handsome, heir to one of the largest thoroughbred farms, and my best friend’s brother. He’s also annoying, incredibly boring, arrogant, and for over half of my life, my sworn enemy. Only now, it seems he needs a favor. As for why, he won’t say.
For two months, I’ll be his girlfriend, and in return he’ll use his society status to help promote my new shop. Seems simple enough, right? Wrong. I think his timing couldn’t be worse, but the way he sees it, it’s the best. The best for who—that’s to be determined.
How do we pretend to be in love when all we’ve ever felt is hate?
Can I do this?
Can he?
Especially knowing it’s fake . . . or is it?
MY REVIEW
I picked up this book because of the millner aspect. I’ve always wanted to wear those beautiful Derby hats one sees at the races, but I doubt I could pull it off. Not the case with Rosie May. That woman has style and grace and has a thriving hat business which is her life. She’s worked hard to be where she is today and Mr. William Stokes Whitlock III is not going to interfere with that. In fact, his deal to be his fake date at a party was the last thing she wanted to do, but maybe dating the enemy will get her and her business noticed. What she didn’t expect was how attentive her enemy would be to her.
The book follows Rosie May and William “Stokes” Whitlock III. The commoner and the heir to Whitlock Farms. The kind, happy young entrepreneur and the serious, boring, wealthy lawyer. Oil and water. Stokes is her best friend Molly’s brother and he’s up to something. Why does he want to date the one person he bullied and humiliated growing up? There is no love loss between them and her first instinct about his offer is to say no, but she’s always been drawn to him. The more time they spend together, the more they discover they aren’t that different after all.
This book is a true love story filled with misunderstandings, yearning, and burning passion. The more I learned about the stoic and mysterious Stokes, the more I fell for him. The story is told from Rosie’s POV so his tell-tell signs of vulnerability and determination to show Rosie his true self, is slowly revealed. I loved the fact that every day after a bad day at work, the man who was so controlled and decisive would hold her in his arms and you could see the weight of his day go away. She calmed him and brought out his gentle and peaceful side. Rosie is so sweet and she loves the Whitlock family. The farm is her home because the Whitlocks treated her like one of them, except for Stokes. She is perplexed why he despises her for so many years and then does a 180 and can’t keep his hands and lips off of her. The loving gestures and growing feelings just made me smile. Wait until the grand gesture. It’s a heart melter. Rosie and Stokes are just meant for each other. Hands down.
Hats off to Ms. Andrews. She has a wonderful way of making one feel the emotions of the characters and experiencing Rosie’s delightful shop and the beautiful Kentucky countryside. Pick up this book. It won’t disappoint. I’m adding this author to my favorites list.
