Holy cow! I forgot how amazing RC Boldt’s dark romantic suspense novels are. When a fearless house cleaner with secrets is caught by a dangerous cartel leader, it’s a battle of wills with a perilous ending.

Lola Arias is a house cleaner in Costa Rica and witnesses a murder. Lola’s extremely tragic past has left her with horrific scars inside and out, and as the story unfolds, we realize that she is not who she seems. I admired her fearlessness and moxie to stand toe to toe with Santiago. Despite the unimaginable hardships she has endured, Lola exudes strength and compassion, refusing to cower to authority and revealing surprising skills along the way.

In spite of Santiago Hernandez’s distrust of everyone (and rightly so), he hesitates to kill Lola because of her bravery, her intelligence, and her strength. His transformation from a powerful but enigmatic leader to a more nuanced character is captivating, and we see that he is not the monster everyone believes him to be.

The chemistry between Santiago and Lola is electrifying, and the hate-to-love dynamic adds an extra layer of tension to their interactions. It’s not just Santiago who falls for Lola against his will; his soldiers also find themselves drawn to her. The suspense in the novel is masterfully crafted, especially as Lola’s true identity is revealed with heartbreaking and triggering detail. Her willingness to sacrifice herself for a loved one without hesitation is a testament to her inner strength, and Santiago’s unwavering support of her decision is both poignant and powerful.

The supporting characters in the novel add importance and richness to the story. My favorite is Gordo with his playful banter and unwavering loyalty to both Santiago and Lola. His presence provides a welcome relief from the seriousness of the main storyline and adds an extra layer of depth to the characters’ relationships.

The gripping suspense, kick-ass characters, and intense emotional journey make this romantic suspense novel a truly unforgettable read. I literally could not put this book down.
