But I didn’t, and now I can’t. Not when I miss the f*ck out of her, and lost a year off my life the night Get Baked was broken into. This time, I promise myself, I’ll give us the shot we should’ve gotten the first time.
If only she gives me a second chance.
Barrett is book three in The Broken Falls Series: a series of interconnected standalones following a group of friends who have become family in small-town West Virginia, and the women who bring them to their knees. You do not have to read them in order, but each book builds upon the relationships of the last.
MY REVIEW
I immersed myself again in the middle of a book series. The book is a novella, so it moved along at a brisk pace, which did not work well for me.
Gabby has divorced her narcissistic ex and worked hard to open her dream business called Get Baked. She has everything she ever wanted but the one man who made her feel happy until he didn’t.
Barrett is a blue-collar worker who has changed thanks to Gabby. He dreams of making Gabby happy and hopes to get a second chance by getting her to trust him again.
The prologue was pretty good as I got a taste of Gabby’s past, but everything rushed through. I wanted to be invested in the characters by experiencing Barrett and Gabby’s first hookup. Still, the narrative skipped those important first moments and cut to the second chance scenario, diminishing the impact for me.
It’s hard to get a short story to work with brevity and substance, and though Barrett is a sweet romance, it’s pretty lackluster for me.
