Wow! That was unexpected! Ms. Smoak has a knack for pulling you down the rabbit hole and leaving you breathless and shell-shocked.
This story made me so anxious. Being in Adeline’s head is a mindf#ck and it was difficult to tell where the author was going with the story. Adeline is a suburban housewife entangled in a web of deceit and desperation. She navigates a thin line between victim and perpetrator with a veil of secrets and manipulation. Her grip on reality is shaky at best, but her attraction to the young neighbor, Ben Jones, is her sole source of genuine happiness. That’s why she must confront her oppressive life and take things into her own hands to combat her abusive husband.
Adeline’s tangled web of emotions and motivations generates a sense of unease and fascination, making her story a compelling yet disconcerting read. While the twists and turns are unique, the novel left me with a lingering sense of disbelief.
If you like psychological thrillers with unreliable narrators, take an extra strength Advil and give it a go.
