ABOUT THE BOOK
I always knew I was unique, but I had no idea a wolf hid beneath my skin.
Isabella
My mentor died under suspicious circumstances, leaving me his vet clinic and a trail of secrets. The locals whisper he uncovered something dangerous in the forests of Shadow Hollow. They might be right.
Discovering I have shifter blood should terrify me, but it’s Ryder who makes my heart race, and awakens a wolf I can’t fully control. The pack elders see me as a threat, but I refuse to run. I need answers, and Ryder won’t let me face this danger alone.
Ryder
As alpha of the Nightshade Pack, I carry the burden of protecting our kind. Birth rates are plummeting, tensions rising, and enemies closing in. Then Isabella enters my world, and everything shifts. She’s my fated mate, but doesn’t know how powerful she really is.
Her inability to shift puts her in Crimson Claw’s crosshairs. To protect her, I’ll have to uncover the truth behind her hidden past, before time runs out for us both.
Love. Power. Destiny. The stakes have never been higher.
MY REVIEW
I recently read a paranormal romantic suspense by Delta James, and I had high hopes going in. With a broody, alpha wolf-shifter and a determined outsider at the center of the story, I thought I was set for a gripping read filled with thrills, mystery, and romance. Instead, I found myself trudging through what felt like an endless cycle of Bella’s daily grind, primarily focused on her mission to uncover the truth about her mentor, Arthur. And Ryder? Well, he spent most of his time telling Bella to back off. Seriously, talk about a relationship stuck in the slow lane!
Ryder, the brooding alpha of the Nightshade Pack in the sleepy little town of Shadow Hollow, is wrestling with a big threat–the mutant wolf-shifters known as the Crimson Claw. Add in the fearless Isabella “Bella” Gordon, an outsider who’s shaking things up and asking all the wrong questions, and you’ve got the makings of some serious conflict. But instead of an exhilarating push-and-pull dynamic, we get Ryder being all dark and moody while Bella refuses to take a hint. I mean, can we move this story along already?
Honestly, while Ryder’s protective instincts as alpha are commendable, the chemistry between him and Bella felt on hold for far too long. I was expecting sexual tension, maybe some witty banter mixed in with their undeniable connection. Instead, I got a lot of distant longing that suddenly turned into a whirlwind romance without any real build-up.
One character that did shine for me was Lucas, Ryder’s Beta brother. He was hilarious and supportive, providing a welcome bit of light-heartedness amidst all the angst. Honestly, I found myself wishing for more scenes with him than with the main couple.
As for the overarching mystery of Arthur’s death, it felt dragged out and tucked between repetitive day-to-day life scenes. I really wanted the secrets to ramp up sooner rather than later.
In conclusion, while there were some intriguing elements at play, the execution left me wanting more. Here’s hoping for a little more unpredictability and a lot less repetition in book 2 of the series.
Thank you to Ms. James for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.
