ABOUT THE BOOK
For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape a rigid caste system, live in a palace, and compete for the heart of gorgeous Prince Maxon. But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her, and competing for a crown she doesn’t want.
Then America meets Prince Maxon—and realizes that the life she’s always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.
MY REVIEW
You know that feeling when you finally read a book that’s been sitting on your TBR pile for way too long? Yeah, that was me with this gem! I’m talking about a unique blend of dystopian vibes and reality TV drama that kept me glued to the pages. If you’re on the hunt for something that feels fresh yet familiar, give this one a try.
America Singer is a 16-year-old girl whose name gets pulled from a lottery to participate in a unique government contest. It’s not a fight to the death, but a competition to win the heart of Prince Maxon and step into the role of a royal.
America hails from a lower caste, the Five, so her journey through this glitzy competition presents a chance not just to win a royal suitor, but to elevate her family’s status as well. While the world-building touches on discontent and hunger, it’s all fairly glossed over, making way for the fun and flirtation that fuels the story.
There is an unexpected sweetness to America and Maxon’s developing relationship. While there are the typical romance tropes, like the Prince falling for the outspoken girl and a poor boyfriend waiting in the wings, the humor and light mystery give these clichés a fresh spin. What’s particularly intriguing is that Maxon actually has to make a choice from among the 35 Selected girls, imparting a sense of urgency and genuine stakes that kept me invested in their evolving romance.
Overall, Kiera Cass has crafted an enjoyable introduction to what promises to be an exciting trilogy. It’s evident that this book sets the stage for much more to come.
If you’re ready for a fun, romantic escapade mixed with dystopian undertones, grab a copy of this book. I, for one, can’t wait to see where America’s journey takes her next.
