The Night Shift by Nancy Peach

ABOUT THE BOOK

Violet Winters is starting her first week of nights and she is petrified. She’s a straight-A student, but practising medicine on real people is another matter entirely. Seems like being a straight-talker can get you in hot water when it comes to patient care… With no one special to spend Christmas with, she signs herself up for the holiday night shift. How much damage could she possibly do?

Dr Gus Jovic, on the other hand, is universally popular, famously unflappable in a crisis and appears to charm patients with ease. But Violet can’t help but wonder … how come Mr Perfect is avoiding a Christmas at home too?

MY REVIEW

This story is a clear example of opposites attract. In a world full of superficiality, Violet Winters is a breath of fresh air with her honesty and quirky charm. She’s not into love in the typical way; in fact, she’s pretty sure she’s not even capable of it. With her structured life and preference for solitude, she thinks she’s being cautious. Then along comes Dr. Gus Jovic, charming and handsome, stirring up a mix of hope and curiosity.

The chemistry between Violet and Gus is interesting. Violet’s bluntness and neurodivergent personality make her stand out, and you can’t help but admire her advocacy for her patients. On the flip side, Gus is calm and almost too perfect, considering he has some baggage from his ex-fiancée and almost blew it with Violet. In short, Gus tells people what they want to hear, and Violet tells people what they need to hear. Their interactions are funny and serious at the same time.

Violet’s roommate, Dev, his partner, Martin, and numerous colleagues add some fun to the mix with their loyalty and humor. And, of course, there are a couple of antagonists that are eventually put in their place.

The story kicks off slowly, and I almost thought about putting it down because I’m all about action in romance. But once the characters began to develop and the opposites-attract vibe took off, things really started to click. There were some moments where the medical speak dragged a bit, pulling me away from the romance, but overall, I’m glad I saw it through.

Violet and Gus’s journey shows that stepping out of your comfort zone can lead to unexpected magic. If you’re looking for a quirky love story with real feelings and a lot of awkward moments, definitely check out their story.

Thank you to Ms. Peach for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.
