ABOUT THE BOOK
When a young man is found dead on the banks of Wiseman’s Ferry, his best friend, Noah Mason, becomes the prime suspect. The evidence is damning—rope fibres, a heated argument, and a witness who swears he heard Noah’s voice in the dark.
But inside the courtroom, the Crown’s tower of circumstantial evidence begins to crumble. Forensic experts question the certainty of ‘consistencies,’ witnesses falter under the weight of their own memories, and a fugitive emerges from the shadows with testimony too raw to ignore.
As the defence exposes flaws in the investigation, the question becomes not just who killed Ethan Davies, but how far fear, bias, and silence can twist the truth.
MY REVIEW
Grantham Prison was purgatory. And he had just been handed the key.
Key to Purgatory is a gripping legal thriller that had me desperately wanting justice.
Whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty? There is nothing I hate more than shitty police work, and this story is filled with it. My heart broke for Noah Mason, who is accused of murdering his best friend. The showman prosecutor is determined to make an example of him, regardless of whether it’s justified. Noah was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time during a camping trip that ended with raised voices and a dead body. He not only lost Ethan, his best friend, but he also lost faith in the justice system and in the friends and family who are supposed to support him.
Noah’s future looks bleak as he is booked and thrown into Grantham Prison, waiting for his trial. In that environment, innocence or guilt scarcely matters. His fight for survival is intensely challenging, and his options are severely limited. I admired the few who stood by him, including his lawyers and a correctional officer who genuinely cared.
Noah’s case is the kind of unjust and hopeless situation that usually makes me anxious. However, Ms. Horsnell’s fast-paced courtroom scenes and Noah’s dedicated defense team alleviated that anxiety, allowing me to breathe a little easier. His attorney, Margaret Usher, is frustratingly calm and quietly brilliant, while Daniel Jackson, her young assistant, is eager and intelligent. Watching them meticulously discredit the prosecution’s circumstantial case exemplifies the meaning of justice.
If you enjoy fast-paced legal thrillers and mysteries, I recommend picking up Key to Purgatory. It’s a captivating read that will have you on the edge of your seat.
Thank you to Ms. Horsnell for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.
