Convicted (Consequences Series #3) by Aleatha Romig

ABOUT THE BOOK

You must stick to your conviction, but be ready to abandon your assumptions. –Denis Waitley

Stick to your convictions.

Against all odds, Claire and Tony have found their way back to one another, but it doesn’t mean a happy ever after. Not even close. Just when they seemed to have it all—love, respect, and the promise of a family—the game master exposes the truth and Claire’s world once again unravels.

With old convictions wavering and past transgressions coming to light, the cards have changed and luck is not in the deck for Claire and Tony. Abandon all assumptions. Lost in a constant nightmare, who will save Claire from her past? From herself? Everyone has a hand to play, and now they’re playing for keeps. Everything known to be true is questioned. Motives are explained. The past is once again unearthed, and this time, secrets lurk between dreams and reality, between the past and the present.

The clock is ticking.

Time is running out on Claire…on Tony…on their happy ever after.

What will happen when the final cards are played, will their unconventional love overcome the opposition?

In the end, some will discover their bets were too high, and all will learn the most crucial lesson—there are always consequences for the truth.

MY REVIEW

Do what you feel in your heart to be right–for you’ll be criticized anyway. You’ll be damned if you do, and damned if you don’t.–Eleanor Roosevelt

So, I finally caught up with the third installment of a series I started last year. Let’s just say, it’s been a bumpy ride with Claire and Tony and Book 3 didn’t live up to my expectations.

Claire is still reeling from the weight of her past. This poor girl has been through the wringer with trust issues, lies, and a mess of bad choices. And now she is broken and stuck in an institution while the world thinks they know what’s best for her. It’s heartbreaking that despite everything, she still longs for Tony’s return. How can she still have hope for a guy who’s caused her so much pain?

Tony is the king of deception, but this time he’s not calling the shots. It’s tough to sympathize with him, especially given how he treated Claire. I was absolutely baffled by the loyalty of his friends. What do they see in him? I mean, seriously, he was an abusive monster. Yet, in a surprising twist, he does finally take responsibility for the chaos he caused. It’s a strange relationship, and honestly, I’m conflicted about their unbalanced dynamic, especially now they are parents.

Flashbacks can be a way to develop characters, but this book went overboard. There were so many of them that I started to lose interest. I found myself trudging through parts that introduced characters I didn’t care about.

I have to say, I usually love Aleatha Romig’s work, but it felt like this series might have overstayed its welcome. At one point, I almost put it down entirely because it lost its spark.

Claire and Tony’s journey ends here, but I’d recommend binge-reading the entire trilogy in one go if you’re planning on diving in. Trust me, don’t make the same mistake I did and wait a year between books!
