ABOUT THE BOOK
A young woman and the cowboy who broke her heart face off in a tumultuous second-chance romance about family, redemption, and loyalty from USA Today bestselling author Kristen Luciani.
When her favorite aunt dies, Savannah Carlson inherits the family’s struggling ranch. But after leaving her corporate life in Denver, she arrives in Wyoming to find things worse than she thought. Turns out, she’s been saddled with an impossible task: Make Red Rock Ranch profitable in six months’ time—or lose it forever.
Overwhelmed yet resolute, she digs right in, ready for anything. Then Blaze Hartman, her brother’s ex–best friend and the slick cowboy who once shattered her heart, returns to town too. When Savannah meets his whiskey eyes, she can’t deny their familiar spark. But those eyes still hide a world of dark secrets.
Running the ranch is anything but simple. Dangerous local crime lords and shocking new details about her parents’ tragic deaths only add to the chaos. As much as it hurts, Savannah longs for the burn of an old flame to help her through. But can she and Blaze rekindle love from the ashes of betrayal?
MY REVIEW
I was excited to read this book since I usually enjoy stories with broken, angsty characters. But the story didn’t deliver the intense, gripping romance I was hoping for.
I hoped Savannah would return as a strong, independent woman ready to prove everyone wrong, but she didn’t. After moving forward in her career, I expected her to be more confident. Instead, she mostly tolerated Blaze and her self-centered brother, Nash. Still, I admired her determination to save her family’s ranch, even when her brother wouldn’t help.
Blaze came across as overwhelmed and weak. Ever since he pushed Savannah away years ago, he kept making poor choices. I didn’t get why he thought Savannah needed his help when he was the one who needed to get his life together. Their chemistry made me keep reading, but the constant miscommunications were annoying. Blaze always kept things to himself and got upset with Savannah for not wanting his help, which was irritating.
There’s also a strange drug-trafficking subplot involving Blaze that didn’t fit the small-town romance I wanted. I wanted a story about love in a cozy setting, but the additional drama felt out of place. The unnecessary plot twist detracted from the romance and left me disappointed.
Overall, this story wasn’t for me. But if you enjoy some angst and a few steamy scenes, you might still like it.
Thank you to Ms. Luciani for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.
