Up in the Treehouse (BelleCurve #1) by K.K. Allen

ABOUT THE BOOK

“I wanted to tell him all my secrets, but he became one of them instead.”

Chloe Rivers never thought she would keep secrets from her best friend, Gavin Rhodes. Then again, she never imagined she would fall in love with him either. When she finally reveals her feelings, rejection shatters her, rendering her vulnerable and sending her straight into the destructive arms of the wrong guy.

The Rhodes twins never saw the betrayal coming. Chloe has always been their forbidden fantasy–sweet, beautiful, and tempting. But soon the lines between family, friendship, and love become as tangled as the roots of the treehouse they once shared.

Now it’s too late . . .

Four years after a devastating tragedy, Chloe and Gavin find themselves crashing back into each other’s lives. Haunted by the past, they’re forced to come to terms with all that has transpired to find the peace they deserve. Except they can’t seem to get near each other without combatting an intense emotional connection that brings them right back to where it all started . . . their childhood treehouse.

Chloe still holds her secrets close, but this time she isn’t the only one with something to hide. Can their deep-rooted connection survive the destruction of innocence?

MY REVIEW

I discovered K.K. Allen this year and I can’t get enough of her books. They are rich in second chances, angst, loss, betrayal, and forgiveness. Not to mention I always seem to have a good cry once or twice during the course of her stories. Up In the Treehouse was no exception.

Chloe Rivers is a woman who loves with all of her heart and when she’s afraid of hurting those she loves, she walks away. But she has returned to her hometown four years later to face the music and the love of her life hates her for leaving him to face the heartache and loss by himself. Can she try to make amends and tell him the truth, or will she have to walk away again even more broken than before?

Gavin Rhodes is a kind and generous man who lost so much four years ago on that fateful graduation night. And now she is back and he doesn’t know if he can forgive her for leaving him when he needed her most. But he has a secret of his own that may just change the course of their relationship.

It is so unbelievable how one statement…one person…can affect the trajectory of your life.  One can’t help but root for Chloe and Gavin. As best friends they could change the world and watching them work to keep that foundation so they can build on it is worth the wait. The secrets are bittersweet and when they opened their hearts, my heart burst for them. I understand Gavin’s hesitation to accept Chloe back in his life, and my heart breaks for Chloe when she gives Gavin her journal so he can truly see how she felt about him and why his brother was so angry that night.

For supporting characters, we have Jazz and Marco who support Chloe and Gavin in everything they do even though they don’t agree with it. Monica is another great supportive friend who has a great sense of humor and a direct approach when it comes to friendly advice, and I can’t wait to read her story in book 2 of the series.

I wholeheartedly recommend this second chance love story filled with anguish and hope that will draw you in and make you read it well into the night. In addition, Ms. Allen does a commendable job addressing very real subject matter such as bullying and grieving.
