MY REVIEW
Trust a Warstone? It’s unfathomable. Séverine was married to one and he abandoned her and his children at an unfinished keep. So she escaped and successfully kept hidden for six years. Until her husband’s brother, Balthus, found her. But she and her village were ready for him and she threw him in a pit. Little did she know he was badly injured with a severed hand so she healed it while losing her heart in the bargain.
Balthus is a brave knight and the youngest of the feared Warstone clan. He has loved Séverine since the moment his selfish brother, Ian, took her for his wife. His mission was to find her and the scrolls she took that lead to a formidable treasure. He also holds a secret about her husband, Ian, that he is afraid to tell her because he wants to hold onto her just a little longer. But he doesn’t deserve her. He’s broken and he’s a Warstone.
Ms. Locke is one of my favorite historical authors with her beautiful writing about love, family, friends, and hope. Séverine is strong and courageous as she evades capture for six years and raises her sons in a loving setting. Her mistrust of Balthus is to be expected because the Warstones are a cruel and unforgiving family. But Balthus, with his emotions on his sleeve, and his love in his heart for a woman he can’t have, is not like his family. He is kind and he is good with his nephews and the people of the village. Their story is heartbreaking and hopeful as two people rise above the Warstone legacy and find their strength together to make a HEA ending.
I recommend this dark historical romance for those who believe that scarred souls can overcome past regrets and create a loving family from a pit of vipers. This is book 11 in the series and I was able to read book 8 Her Dark Knight’s Redemption which introduced me to Balthus’ brother Reynold and his mission to find the treasure so I wasn’t totally lost in the plot. With that being said, I suggest one read the series in order for the best reader experience.
