The Only Exception (Love in the Comptons #2) by Claire Huston
ABOUT THE BOOK
Lucinda Green knows something is missing from her life. But what? Her catering business is enjoying modest success and she loves her cosy house, even if she does have to share it with her irritating ex-fiancé.
Whatever’s making her unsettled and edgy, Lucinda’s certain that a lack of romance isn’t the problem. How could it be when she doesn’t believe in true love?
But Lucinda’s beliefs are shaken by a series of electric encounters with Alex Fraser, a newly-notorious actor who gradually proves himself to be infuriatingly funny and smart, as well as handsome.
Not that any of that matters. Because Lucinda doesn’t believe in all that ‘The One’ nonsense. That’s the rule.
But doesn’t every rule have an exception?
This uplifting grumpy-meets-sunshine romance is perfect for fans of Katie Fforde, Phillipa Ashley and Milly Johnson.
MY REVIEW
A fun romantic comedy with a grumpy caterer and an awkward actor. Head’s butt, words fly, and attraction builds.
Alex Fraser is a popular supporting actor in a detective series and loves to research upcoming roles on other projects. His latest research has him working at a catering gig run by the woman he assisted in saving a cardiac arrest victim in a random elevator. Unfortunately, the stubborn woman isn’t impressed with him, and why would that bother him?
Lucinda Green is trying to keep her catering business running smoothly despite staff shortages and setbacks. She doesn’t have time for relationships with handsome actors. She doesn’t believe in love and they have nothing in common… or do they?
I love the fact that Ms. Huston’s characters are in their 40’s, are established in their jobs, and are finally falling for someone who gets them. Their relationship statuses are a bit tangled, but that all works out in the end. Lucinda is a bit of a harpy and rushes to judgment, but Alex’s charm, wit, and calm acceptance win her over. The whole saving Lady Russell is an interesting take on how the protagonists meet and the comical way in which they are brought together after that at the catering event is refreshing and worth the wait.
Lucinda and Alex’s families are a great addition to the story as they add depth and understanding to how the protagonists tick.
I highly recommend this refreshing and funny love story filled with quirky characters and interesting locations.
Thank you to Ms. Huston for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.
