MY REVIEW
The maid’s daughter and the billionaire’s son. Something pulls me to the poor girl/rich boy theme and a lot is going on in this coming-of-age story.Â
Told in dual points of view in the past and present, we slowly understand what makes the characters tick. The sparks fly from the very beginning until everything comes to a head.
Broken heroes are always fascinating to me. Some are absolute psychopaths and some are angry, but vulnerable types. Beckett Anderson is the latter. As a young boy, he witnessed his mother’s death and is now spiraling out of control due to his stepmother’s evil ways and his billionaire father’s lack of care. His sad descent into drugs and despair is so tragic and heartbreaking while he takes all his frustrations out on Eve Martino, his best friend’s twin sister, and the person who knows his secrets. But Eve does not take blackmail lightly. She is a strong, independent woman who works hard to make ends meet at college, and she is Beckett’s salvation with a smart mouth and the right touch.Â
Beckett and Eve’s intense chemistry cannot be denied. Beckett is unhappy and lost, while Eve is tough and determined. Their interactions are full of sparks from the very beginning, and it’s clear that Beckett has it bad for Eve. He becomes extremely possessive, refusing to allow anyone else to have her. The spicy banter is hot!
But there is more to the story than just a romance. The campus attacker and armed robbery add an element of suspense, forcing Beckett and Eve to work together and rely on each other. It’s heartening to see Beckett start to grow as a man with Eve’s undying support and true conviction to get revenge for those who hurt him in the past. No cliffhangers here. It ends with a satisfying happily ever after.
I highly recommend this coming-of-age, sports romance for those who enjoy college angst, volatile chemistry, and a little suspense.Â
