Highland Beast (Sons of Sinclair #4) by Heather McCollum

ABOUT THE BOOK

Bàs Sinclair is the cold and brutal hand—and sword—of justice across the Highlands. He has one destiny: to bring fear into the hearts of guilty men. But when he is called to execute a midwife for her crimes, he cannot raise his weapon. For Bàs already knows this lovely, part-wild creature. After all, she gave him his first and only kiss…

Shana Drummond will do anything to protect her beloved sister. Now her cruel, merciless brother-in-law has called upon Bàs to have Shana killed for crimes she didn’t commit. She can’t reconcile the cold, lethal warrior before her with the gentle one she met—nay, kissed—only days before.

But mercy from Bàs can only lead to one thing: war among the clans. A war that will test allegiances, tear families apart, and challenge everything Bàs knows about himself and his heart. Because once this Highlander knows love, nothing will stop him from keeping Shana safe…even if it means destroying his own destiny.

MY REVIEW

A highlander warrior who defied destiny for love. I adore Scottish highlanders, and Heather McCollum’s Sons of Sinclair series is my favorite. I’ve been looking forward to The Horseman of Death’s story, which didn’t disappoint.

Since age five, Bás Sinclair has been tasked as an executioner for his clan, wielding his ax against guilty men. People fear his presence with a name that means Death, and his life is lonely and isolated until he meets the brave and capable Shana Drummond, who sees past his duty to the sweet, kind-hearted man who loves animals more than humans.

Bás is a fascinating and complex character who evokes sympathy and intrigue. His no-win situation has him torn between the past and hope for the future with Shana. Despite the brutal things he does, he has the heart to create a memorial to all the people that he, the Horseman of Death, has killed. It shows his strength of character and determination not to succumb to the darkness. Shana gives him the assurance of forgiveness and a chance at redemption. She sees the man hidden behind the mask as she shoots down his theory that “he is Death” and refutes the ridiculous myth that no one can touch him or they will die. She has a tragic story herself that only makes her stronger and more empathetic, allowing her to connect with Bás on a profound level. Also, Shana is a midwife which adds depth and richness to her character as she nurtures those around her garnering loyalty and trust from the Sinclair clan.

The wonderful characters from the previous books add to the unity within the family. I admired how the Sinclair women were unafraid of Bás and rallied around him and Shana during a dangerous and delicate time that could have gotten them all killed. When the Four Horsemen recite the scripture quotes from Revelation right before battle, it’s a sight to behold and gives me chills.

This story turned out to be my favorite book in the series. I highly recommend the Sinclairs to those who love Highlander romances with compelling characters and intriguing plots.

Thank you to Ms. McCollum for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.
