ABOUT THE BOOK
They were born three thousand years apart, but fate brought them together.
Dragged into the ancient past by a crashing spaceship, Tor and his fellow Vikings face starvation in an autumn that is six months too early. Then they meet the mysterious Kiana, and the villagers whose winter shelter has been destroyed by the spaceship.
Uneasy allies at first, these two leaders find unexpected love as they join forces to build a home together, until Kiana’s enemies threaten her new life.
MY REVIEW
This book offers an intriguing blend of history, adventure, romance, and a hint of science fiction that felt incomplete.
Tor is a Viking warrior forced into exile with his family after a brutal conflict. The story takes a dramatic turn when they encounter a savage storm and a rogue spaceship that propels them back in time by 3,000 years. Stranded in a new land, they are met by villagers who are apprehensive at first, but with the help of a beautiful warrior, are willing to help.
Kiana is a warrior fleeing from a tragic past. She adopts a new identity with the villagers in this cold northern terrain with her young ward, Beren, as she trains the locals to fight. Naturally the villagers are suspicious of the newcomers when a strange object crashes into their mountain and they lose the caves they use for the winter. As they struggle to prepare for the harsh winter, Kiana’s magical ability to speak to the Vikings is a surprise element that leads to her mystique and her value to bridging the gap between diverse peoples. However, Kiana has a secret; no one can know her real identity. The danger is too great.
Tor and Kiana’s initial animosity gradually morphs into palpable chemistry and mutual respect. Tor originally comes off as arrogant and unyielding, but beneath his grumpy exterior, lies a sense of humor and a heart capable of tenderness. I love Kiana’s complexity, resilience, and bravery as she struggles with her responsibilities and newfound passion. The challenges Tor and Kiana face teach them invaluable lessons about the importance of communication and trust which makes them great role models for their people.
This character-driven depiction of Viking life and the intricacies of combat to survival in a harsh land is enthralling. However, the lack of focus on the science fiction elements leaves the story feeling unfinished.
Over all, the story’s unique premise is refreshing and the characters are compelling, but it may not satisfy all readers due to its loose ends.
