Summer Nights at Hillview Farm (The Glenbriar Series #18) by Margaret Amatt

Summer Nights at Hillview Farm

ABOUT THE BOOK

Some rules were made to be broken… especially when it comes to love.

After a tragedy left her heart shattered, deputy headteacher Adele Robson has rebuilt her life in Glenbriar, keeping her grief hidden behind a polished, no-nonsense exterior.

Rugged farmer Owen Lyndell is having a hard time with his wayward teenage son Max, and the summer holidays at Hillview Farm aren’t going well.

Term-time clashes over Max have made Adele and Owen loathe each other, so discovering her new dream cottage is next door to Owen’s farm is unwelcome news, especially when she’s finally built up the courage to carry out the summer bucket list she and her late fiancé dreamed of. And when Owen shows up accidentally during one of her bucket-list activities, they start to see a different side to each other.

Between horse riding, wild swimming, and sunsets over Loch Briar, both Owen and Adele have a chance to rediscover love. But only if Adele can overcome her past heartbreak… plus the immovable fact that she’s Max’s teacher, and when summer ends, she and Owen must return to a professional relationship.

But perhaps the last item on the bucket list is one already written in the stars.

MY REVIEW

It’s hard to believe that two years have passed since I first experienced the Glenbriar series. Amatt’s enchanting descriptions of the Scottish countryside and captivating characters leap off the page as I go on another unforgettable journey.

Adele Robson is the buttoned-up deputy headteacher of Glenbriar High School. I love it when students and staff alike shrink when she walks the halls. Her persona at work is professional, meticulous, and intimidating, but underneath it all, she is grieving her fiancé, who died three years ago. When she makes the brave move to a cottage in the country, she finds herself living next door to Owen Lyndell, the father of one particularly unruly teen, Max. Needless to say, their run-ins are tenuous at first until she finally lets her hair down, and he appreciates the view.

Owen Lyndell is a hardworking farmer and the father of rebellious teen Max. He’s the kind of man who prefers to keep to himself, especially when it comes to those dreaded meetings with Miss Adele Robson. Their relationship starts off rocky, with Adele’s unsolicited advice about his son and Owen’s notion that Max is a teenager and will get over the rebellion. Until he offers to help her complete a bucket list that her fiancé created before he died.

The story takes a delightful turn when Owen’s self-critical outlook collides with Adele’s structured world, and I can’t help but root for both of them. The bucket list adds a richness and light-heartedness to the unfolding drama of what to do about a forbidden attraction between a teacher and a parent. Add in an angsty teen who is looking for his future, a matchmaking mom, and lovable animals who steal the show, and it completes the story.

The Glenbriar series continues to captivate me. So, if you’re looking for a story that transports you to a breathtaking Scottish landscape while exploring the raw edges of human emotions, look no further.

Thank you to Ms. Amatt for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Margaret Amatt headshotMargaret Amatt is a bestselling Scottish author, professional daydreamer, and certified chocolate addict. She’s been making up stories for as long as she can remember – some of them even made it onto paper (and, tragically, onto floppy disks that no computer can read anymore). After two decades of writing in secret, she finally unleashed her first novel on the world in 2021, kicking off a ten-book series set on the stunning Isle of Mull.

But why stop there? She’s also the creator of The Glenbriar Series, where romance, small-town drama, and a pinch of spice keep readers coming back for more. This series is still going strong, with more books planned!

Margaret has spent her whole life in Scotland’s breath-taking Highland Perthshire, despite her entire extended family coming from the Glasgow area. Her books are romantic and emotional, sweet and funny, and each one can be read as a standalone, but long-time readers know the joy of familiar faces popping up, adding to the chaos.

So, if you love relatable characters, sizzling chemistry, and plenty of banter, you’re in the right place – just don’t blame Margaret when you stay up way too late reading just one more chapter.
