When We Drifted Back (The Seasons of Us #2) by Cassandra Whitmore

ABOUT THE BOOK

Ten years apart. One chance encounter. And a love neither of them ever forgot.

Ashley thought she’d moved on—new city, new job, new life far from the small-town secrets and complicated friendships she left behind. But when she literally runs into Brandon—her first crush, her almost-everything—the past rushes back like it never left.

Their reunion stirs up memories of sleepovers, parties, and promises whispered at thirteen… including the one where they swore they’d marry if still single at thirty. Now thirty-two, Brandon isn’t letting her go again—and he’s ready to make good on that teenage vow.

But with rekindled feelings come old wounds and unfinished business. As Ashley reconnects with the friends she once called family, she must confront the question: can you ever really go home again… or do some friendships—and loves—just drift back when you need them most?

MY REVIEW

I liked the idea of this book, but it fell short for me. Second-chance tropes are one of my favorites, but there was just too much past and not enough present.

This story unfolds across two timelines, revealing the journey of Ashley, Brandon, and a circle of friends that once thrived but eventually drifted apart. With themes of love, friendship, and the nostalgia of youth, it’s got all the ingredients for a heartwarming tale. However, the story could have been told in half the pages and still delivered the same emotional punch. There’s a fair amount of repetition throughout the book, which slowed it down for me, as I skipped over past passages to get back to the present.

The book is filled with potential and heartfelt moments, even if it falters in execution. I did appreciate the rawness of it all. It mirrored real life as messy, unpredictable, and filled with threads that don’t always come together neatly. If you’re looking for a read that delves into the complexity of friendships and loves lost and found, it might be worth checking out.

Thank you ot Ms. Whitmore for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.
