Cursed (Enchanted Gods #1) by K.K. Allen
ABOUT THE BOOK
USA Today Bestselling Author, K.K. Allen, takes readers on a deeply romantic and extraordinarily suspenseful adventure in a contemporary fantasy series based on a young woman learning the true nature of her bloodline and the enchanting world that awaits her.
Katrina Summer always knew she was different. Her fiery temper seems to perpetually land her in hot water, making her an outcast among her peers. When tragedy strikes and she’s sent to live with her only remaining family in the tiny coastal town of Apollo Beach, Katrina starts counting down the days until her eighteenth birthday.
Only then will she finally be free.
As Katrina learns the legends of her Ancient Greek ancestors, secrets from her heritage are exposed—secrets that her mother purposefully concealed. Her only solace is found in Alec Stone, the gorgeous guy next door. With his devastatingly charming smile, his persistent flirtation, and a love that sparks from the flames of friendship, he offers her a much-needed escape from the turmoil.
If only she wasn’t cursed.
As powerful forces threaten the lives in Apollo Beach, Katrina can’t escape the evocative world of mythological enchantment and evil prophecies that lurk around every corner. For fans of Twilight, Teen Witch, The Secret Circle, and Percy Jackson.
I’m a big fan of K.K. Allen’s contemporary romances (see A Bridge Between Us, Up in the Treehouse, and Over the Moon) so I was stoked to pick up her new adventure into fantasy. I was pleasantly surprised by the interesting references to Greek mythology and intrigued by the build-up to the main character’s discovery of her magical family heritage.
Kat’s life just went from bad to worse. After losing a loved one, she’s in a new town with strangers who know everything about her and apparently, she has a magical target on her back. Her grandmother Rose Summer, who she has never met has taken her in and is ready to show Kat her duties when she turns 18 years old during the Summer Solstice. Unfortunately, Kat’s powers take some getting used to.
I can understand why Kat is frustrated with Rose and Rose’s assistant, Charlotte, when they give her vague answers at best to her questions about her strange dreams, visions and hearing private conversations while she’s standing several feet away. When Kat is warned to take her new duties slowly or all hell will break loose, as teenagers do, she loses control at a party and almost kills a mean girl as well as herself. But it wasn’t all her magic that caused the catastrophe. The ancient enemy of her family left his calling card and her life is in danger. Yet who saved her from drowning that night?
Kat’s love interest Alec is persistent and sticks up for her with the mean girls, and boy, are those girls nasty. Alec needs to get himself some new friends. My favorite perplexing character is the hot and grumpy, Johnny, who has taken an immediate dislike of Kat for reasons unknown. I’m guessing there is more to this yummy, scarred hero and we will see more of him in the next book. Then of course there is Rose, Kat’s sweet and fierce grandmother who only wants the best for Kat and to pass along her wisdom of their ancient Greek heritage.
I highly recommend this tantalizing romantic fantasy full of Greek mythology, mysterious characters, and magical suspense. Book 2 here I come.
Thank you to K.K. Allen for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.
